LEAGUE CITY, Texas -- A Galveston County deputy constable made a special roadside delivery on Tuesday. He helped a woman deliver her baby, KPRC Local 2 reported.
In the middle of rush hour Tuesday morning, a call came in that a mother was delivering her baby in a vehicle on the side of the busy Gulf Freeway in League City.
Precinct 8 Deputy Constable Dennis Murphy was the first to arrive.
"(I) took a peek and the baby was crowning. The baby was coming," Murphy said.
In his 18 years in law enforcement, Murphy said it was a first.
Thanks to the mother's strength and a solid push, Murphy said before he knew it, he was holding a brand new baby girl.
But, she was too still, so Murphy said he started stimulating the baby and worked to get her to bond with her mother.
After a few heart stopping moments of silence, the baby uttered a breath and a cry.
"League City EMS was right behind (Murphy) and was able to take over and it was a happy ending," said Constable Jerry Fisher, with Galveston County Precinct 8.
"It's a sight and a sound you'll never ever forget," Murphy said. "Anything can happen at any point in time and we're ready for it. That's what the state of Texas pays us for. That's what all the training is about."
He said having two sons and five grandchildren made the moment even more powerful.
"(It was) very exciting, very exhilarating. I'm glad I was in the right place at the right time," Murphy said.
Murphy said he would like to one day meet the family he helped.
