Despite the Bye Week, Cowboys move to number 1 DEF in DVOA, and 11th in OFF

If I remember correctly before the games were played we were 12th in Offense (up from 16th, 17th and 18th the previous weeks) and between 2-6 the previous weeks on defense.

DVOA is actually a great indicator for success and stands for defensive variation over average.

Top 5 teams in DVOA

1.) Eagles
2.) Bills
3.) Cowboys
4.) Ravens
5.) Seahawks

Next Opponent: Greenbay is ranked 20th.

A surprise for some:
1.) The Giants are ranked behind the Packers at 21st.
2.) The Vikings are 17th/ Titans are 18th
3.) The Buccaneers are in the top

It's why I figured our defense would still be good. Usually teams rated in the top 2 in DVOA last as a top 10 ish defense for about 3 years. (Really we were 1 until that last game where our defense was barely trying).

2015 Denver Broncos
2015 Rank: 1
2016: 1
2017: 10
2018: 5

2013 Sahawks:
2013: 1
2014: 1
2015: 4
2016: 5

Notes: Vikings had three top 10 defensive DVOA years (2016,17, and 18)

Other relevant QB News:

Offensive DVOA with Dak
2016: 3
2017: 10 (This surprised me genuinely)
2018: 24th
2019: 2
2020 (Before Dak Injury): 1 (after that we finished 24th)
2021: 6th

Offense DVOA?
Offensive Defensive Variations Over Anerage?

Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo to me. I'm glad they have ranked high, I guess.

It can be very helpful, especially for making bets. I felt comfortable that the Seahawks would beat the Giants...(well aside from just watching the two teams play), because of DVOA. It gives great insight.

https://www.footballoutsiders.com/info/methods

Example given by Football Outsiders:

"
One running back runs for three yards. Another running back runs for three yards. Which is the better run? This sounds like a stupid question, but it isn’t. In fact, this question is at the heart of nearly all of the analysis on Football Outsiders.

Several factors can differentiate one three-yard run from another. What is the down and distance? Is it third-and-2 or second-and-15? Where on the field is the ball? Does the player get only three yards because he hits the goal line and scores? Is the player’s team up by two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and thus running out the clock; or down by two touchdowns, and thus facing a defense that is playing purely against the pass? Is the running back playing against the porous defense of the Raiders, or the stalwart defense of the Bears?"

Hate that seems like football stats are headed much like baseball which is inundated with so many specific stats on players and teams that it boggles the mind, twists the brain, and squeezes the life out of the average fan. Baseball is absolutely over the top with for example, how a player hits changeups batting left handed on a sunny day facing a left handed pitcher with a mustache playing at home. I mean it has gotten ridiculous. Oh well, progress i guess.

The problem with the NFL is their ridiculous scheduling…stats mean nothing in the NFL. Teams and players pad their stats against bad teams..

Teams within the division should play a common schedule…

Philadelphia stats mean nothing. They have a soft schedule…
