I saw on ESPN this morning that for the blundered field goal, the refs brought in a different ball, apparently one that was much slicker then usual.....Does anyone have any knowledge of this or why they do this?

As I understand it, the refs coated it with land o' lakes butter just before putting the ball into play. I don't know if it's true or not - I just heard it on the innernet.

It's called a "K-ball" and is used specifically for kicks. It's basically a normal ball that isn't broken in. When wet, the film on the ball gets slick.

Romo has been holding kicks for years, he should have been used to it.
