Jerry Jones is not necessarily worried about a team coming after restricted free agent wide receiver Miles Austin, but he is concerned about dealing with a possible "poison pill" contract that would make it even more difficult for him to match in an uncapped year.

After Minnesota and Seattle got involved in those dealings regarding Steve Hutchinson and Nate Burleson a few years ago, the NFL did not ban such contracts but let it be known they are frowned upon.

"That's always a concern and that's one of the things that needs to be addressed in the new collective bargaining agreement," Jones said. "Those are called unintended consequences there. What turns into trying to be competitive among clubs and what turns into trying to be fair for a player turns into being a disadvantage for the clubs."

Safety Gerald Sensabaugh was given a second-round tender and has received interest from teams although no visits have been arranged yet.

"The facts are that legitimate, good contracts offered by other teams are not necessarily bad news," Jones said, "so all of that you take into consideration."

What is a poison pill contract?

It's when you sign a restricted free agent to an offer sheet that his team won't possibly match. Like he if he plays 8 games at home, he's entitled to 50 million dollars in guarantees. Basically making a team poison themselves by trying to match.

Fixed it for you for better sense.

Nobody will pull that poison pill stuff with Jerry. he's like the Godfather of Texas. Jerry will put a hit out on somebody if he has to to set an example.

To clarify: Miles Austin being entitled to 50 million in guarantees if he plays eight games in Texas.

That would affect Dallas, but not the team that makes the offer (unless it were the Texans).

I think what Seattle did was make make the stipulation of X games played in X state, then the entire contract would be guaranteed.

After what happened with Minnesota... I doubt anyone tries that crap anytime soon. I hope it is definitely against the next CBA.

The NFL made it clear "poison pills" were frowned upon following the Minnesota and Seattle wars.

No teams have engaged in the practice since then as far as I am aware.

But I agree with Jerry Jones that it should be made official in the new CBA.

Yeah, that's what I've been trying to say in other threads where people are worried about Austin getting a "poison pill" contract. Teams are less inclined to do that now because the powers that be don't want them.

Plus, it takes the player and his agent agreeing to said contract before it can happen anyway. If a player wants out so bad that he'll accept a contract Jerry can't match, then good riddance.

Thats the way I look at it, if one of our players hate playing in Dallas so bad that they would sign an offer sheet with a poison pill in it............then I say good riddance as well.

If Austin wants out that bad (just an example guys) and signs a poison pill contrace, then I say **** him.
