I'm sure NBC anticipated that could be the storyline for tonight's game. The network probably figured that Tony Romo would be the Pro Bowler returning from injury who came to the Cowboys' rescue.

But the Cowboys managed to beat the Commanders without a big game from Romo, in large part because of CB Terence Newman.

Newman was embarrassed in the Cowboys' September loss to the Commanders, when he got beat for 97 yards and two TDs. He missed the next five games after undergoing sports hernia surgery.

The coaches certainly didn't ease Newman back into the mix. His assignment: Shut down Cowboys killer Santana Moss, a rare instance in which the Cowboys have a cornerback follow the opponent's best receiver all over the field.

Newman, who declared Friday afternoon that he'd come out straight ballin', rose to the occasion. Moss was held to five catches for 29 yards, making no impact against a NFC East rival that he's tortured since singing with the Commanders.

Newman's ability to blanket Moss in man coverage also played a major role in keeping Clinton Portis from having a big game. The Cowboys were able to consistently stack eight men in the box since Newman didn't need any help.

"I was up for the challenge," said Newman, who had an interception and broke up a fourth-down pass in Cowboys' territory late in the game. "Hey, I got something to prove."

Pucker up, baby! Martellus Bennett made a big play

Martellus Bennett's game-winning touchdown came on the same play as the first score of his NFL career. But this seam route against man coverage by a safety came in a completely different situation.

Bennett had no reason to celebrate his first career TD, which came late in a humiliating loss to the Rams, dude. His leaping grab over Commanders SS Chris Horton gave the Cowboys their first lead with 10:43 remaining in the game.

"You can get your first kiss from Oprah, or you can get your first kiss from Halle Berry," Bennett said, explaining the difference as only he could. "Oprah gave me the first kiss. This was Halle Berry right here."

Talking with several players after the game, you could just see the relief on their faces. The season is far from over after a 14-10 win over the Commanders. Now sporting a 6-4 record, the Cowboys are set up to win the next two home games against bad teams and be right back in the thick of the playoff race.

"It was big. I'm sure y'all can see that yourself," Marion Barber said.

Guard Leonard Davis said: "This win is definitely big. Every win is big. We know what we've got to do and we know our situation. We're not going to just take anything for granted."

There were a lot of things to like about the win. Overall effort is far and away the No. 1 thing I thought about driving back to the hotel. The defensive guys were flying to the football. Terence Newman relished the challenge of going up against Santana Moss, and it showed with his interception and batted ball on fourth-and-4.

Clinton Portis tried to be a Superman and play with a sprained ligament in his knee, but he didn't really do much. You've got to tip your cap to the Cowboys' run defense. And how about Jay Ratliff with his two sacks.

The offensive line played up to its resume. Marion Barber got plenty of chances with 24 carries, and he didn't let the coaching staff down by piling up 66 yards in the fourth quarter.

Overall, a solid effort, seems to me.

Love that Newman! Straight ballin! ... that got me fired up just hearing it. And he delivered after saying that.

I expect more of this kind of play from our defense in the weeks to come.

I am sorry. I dont know much about football. Shouldnt this just about ALWAYS be the way to execute a gameplan.????

Last week a couple of people talked about Newman not being able to come in and shut down moss looks like some people were wrong. After the game Newman was interviewed on the radio and asked about the defense and he said we played 95% man coverage and played as a team.

I hope we keep that up

Oprah vs. Halle.

:laugh2:

Bennett is nothing if not interesting.

Dallas played lots of man yesterday... The defensive line stepped it up knocking on Jason's door all day long...

Do you hear the clicking??? That's the team clicking together and firing on all cylinders!! Keep it up fellas, and we ge Felx back soon too....

Let the run for the Playoffs begin!!!!

Agreed....we need to keep it up.

Major props to Newman.

But... Jason "7 yards/attempt or less" Campbell was the QB. :laugh2:

We all know that we "needed" this game in a big way, and thankfully, we stepped up and took care of business. Now, let's just hope that we can keep it up and not let intensity slip as the season progresses.

That's about the highest compliment you can give a CB in the NFL.

Does make you wonder where this man coverage has been all these years

I do as well. For me I understood the reason behind it. We started the season with a guy who had not played in over a year and with rookies that is enough for many of coaches to lay off. With Newman back in and the rookies gaining experiance I think we will see a lot more man coverages.

No. Every team doesn't have a shut down corner who can man up with anyone. Taking the "Kowboy Killer" out of the game and still being able to stack the box was a good move that not one any team could do.

Taking the run away made them pass. Once they figured out how to stop those damn screens and dump offs they shut the Skins down. They had no vertical game. And you have to give the safeties some credit with that. And the wind.
