Dallas Cowboys outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware is taking a more active role with the National Fooball League Players Association. Ware is scheduled to participate in the Player Safety & Welfare Summit on Friday in Indianapolis, during the gathering for the NFL combine.

According to the NFLPA, the focus of the forum is to ``generate meaningful discussions between players and representatives within the sports equipment/nutrition industry in hopes of ultimately increasing the overall health and safety of NFL players.'' Ware is among about 20 current and retired players expected to participate.

Goal #1 should be to try and eliminate the sequelae of multiple concussions - this is a hot topic in hockey right now, too.

To start with make all helmets SOFT on the exterior to absorb impact.
Have every player custom fit their helmet- with extra energy absorbing filler inside. The new mouthpieces ALWAYS in for every play= and any player with out the chinstrap tightly in place gets a 15 yd penalty.

Unless the whole helmet was soft then wouldn't it make the impact harder?

The key issue is always deceleration of the intracranial contents and not just dissipation of the blunt force impact. I think it will take lots of work to improve helmet design. At the end of the day the equipment has to be compact and I just don't envision the end design to be one with excessive amounts of soft external padding.

Unfortunately it is an area that has been woefully under-researched. Hopefully this thing starts to get turned around here.
