Do we actually need an offensive coordinator? What role will our HC play

If our head coach will be calling plays. Or is this the situation where you have a running game coordinator and passing game coordinator? Can Shotty do this and manage the team? May want to give someone the assistant coach title to help out, please give your thoughts!

I'm not big on HC's who also call all the plays. I prefer a "walk around" coach who let's his coordinators do their jobs. And what offense are we running? Does Schotty have a different one than what we had last year? Too many unanswered questions!!

Yes you need an OC. A head coach is going to spend time with the offense, defense, and special teams. They need that guy who is doing the grunt work monday through saturday for all three aspects. A head coach is coaching up the coaches just as much if not more than they are players. You need the OC to develop the initial game plans, run the installs in practice, etc. The HC needs to sign off on everything, and they will instruct the coordinators before the summer what type of schemes they want them to build the offense/defense around, but no one has the time to play both HC and full time coordinator. Play calling is just the smart part of an coordinators job that we see and can be critical of on a weekly basis. What happens though the week is going to be way more important than calling plays.

I don't see how a first-time head coach ( first-time is key ) can call plays AND manage the team during game time, especially in years 1-2. I love that Glenn is going to the "head coach" not a defensive coach. As he put it, he will not call plays, that's the coordinator's job. He wanna make sure all three are in sync for games. I say the first couple years coz IMO it takes a new at least that time to understand ALL his player's strengths and weaknesses not just in practice but live games against certain competitions.
How can you stay focused on ALL three phases of a game if you are worried about running the correct offensive plays?

please give your thoughts!

First year HC, wtih no OC? What could possibly go wrong in terms of clock management, etc.? It's not like our outgoing HC had these issues....right?

I think they're looking for someone to oversee the offense and something else I just read!! Terrible memory these days

Has he said he will be calling plays? And even if he does, calling plays and working up the initial draft of the game plan and directing offensive practices and teaching sessions aren't the same things. Even if a head coach calls plays, he can't do everything. He still has responsibility for defense and special teams

Yeah that's why he's going to hire someone to do that for him, I think MM was trying to do all of that

Yes.

A HC is like a general manager or director.

He manages the managers (coordinators).

The managers manage the supervisors (position coaches).

The supervisors manage the rank and file employees (players).

you have no shot at being a mod if your memory is failing you!
Good point, I won't be able to remember the secret mod handshake that none of you will ever know. Matter of fact I shouldn't even have said that, this could cost me the interview!!! (Mods please don't get mad at me!) lol jk

You really don't understand football...I thought your constant questions were just an act...my bad, I'll try to be more understanding of your situation from here on.

They definitely need a fresh set of eyes and ideas for the putrid run game, so an OC with that skill set would be ideal.

Mary, I agree with your point. Unless you have Andy Reid, having the HC call plays takes away a lot of their focus on other areas of game management. Like clock management, replay challenges, overall flow of the game.
