Was a 28 year old rookie? His birthday is 3/24/70 (making him the oldest player on the team by almost 2 years) and he didn't start playing with the Colts until '98. Did he start late at WVU? Did he play in another league before the NFL? Just curious

according to Wikipedia..

Michael "Mike" Vanderjagt (born March 24, 1970 in Oakville, Ontario) is a National Football League player from Canada who plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

He was a four-sport star (football, basketball, soccer, and track) at Oakville's White Oaks High School, and originally enrolled at Michigan State as a quarterback in 1988. However, he left Michigan State for a California junior college, where he punted and played quarterback. He returned to major-college football as a punter and placekicker at West Virginia University, starring in both roles in 1991 and 1992.

After graduating from WVU in 1993, he returned to Canada and started a career in the CFL. He played briefly for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in 1993. He did not play in 1994 or 1995. Vanderjagt returned to the league in 1996 with the Toronto Argonauts, serving as the regular placekicker and punter. He led the CFL in yardage per punt in 1997, and the Argos won the Grey Cup in both 1996 and 1997.

In 1996, Vanderjagt also played for the Minnesota Fighting Pike of the Arena Football League.

In 1998, Vanderjagt crossed the border and joined the Indianapolis Colts, and was a fixture as the club's placekicker until the end of the 2006 season. He led the NFL in scoring in 1999, and is now the most accurate field-goal kicker in the league's history (217-248, 87.5% at the end of the 2005 season).

Something else interesting.....

Vanderjagt hired our very own Steve Hoffman as his own personal kicking coach after Parcells fired him from the Cowboys organization.

Where did you come across this?

I thought Hoffman was working for the Falcons now.

I'd read that before as well -- don't recall where but I likely turned it up during a "if Hoffman was so good then why isn't he still coaching?" rant.

OK, so let Vanderjagt do the placekicking and the punting, get rid of McBriar, and get a kickoff specialist!! roster problem solved! :D

FOR KICKS

Whether it's because he is headed into the last year of his contract or because the Colts invested a sixth-round pick in another kicker, Indianapolis kicker Mike Vanderjagt has taken the unusual step this offseason of hiring his own kicking coach. And not just any kicking coach. Vanderjagt hired former Dallas Cowboys kicking coach Steve Hoffman, who has helped develop so many unproven NFL kickers over the years. In recent weeks, Vanderjagt has been working with Hoffman in Dallas, trying to improve his performance. It's a big year for Vanderjagt. As it is, he is scheduled to count $2.87 million against the Colts salary cap. After this season, he is scheduled to become a free agent. And he will have to battle for his job in training camp with sixth-round pick Dave Rayner, who is said to have looked impressive in the Colts minicamp.

Does anybody have that stat about Vandy's 4th quarter and OT field goal percentage?

I'm sick of hearing everybody say he's a choker and can't make the clutch kick just because all they rememember is his miss in the playoffs against Pittsburgh. I know his percentage was very high in those circumstances but I can't seem to find the number.

You beat me to it. Nice name. What's next the Chicago Fighting Chihuahua's?

They were only a franchise for one year (1996).

Yes, I looked them up and, yes, I wanted a t-shirt.

This was in the offseason last year, when he was a "consultant for hire".
