Does this draft have a Brock Purdy?

By that I mean a late round QB who could become a solid starter? I’m not a QB scout.

McCord obviously has a cannon and can conceivably make every NFL throw.

Tommy Mellott looks like Lamar Jackson out there sometimes, against his admittedly lackluster competition. I actually really like watching him. He’s one of the best running QBs I’ve ever seen in college.

Gabriel has a weaker arm but is super smart and hyper accurate. Him becoming a great backup or good bus driver seems pretty ressonable to me.

What do you think? Is there any later round QB that could carve out a solid career and it wouldn’t surprise you?

Yeah Kyle McCord is definitely 1 option to take a shot on. Still can’t figure out why Ohio State chose Howard over him.

The other I like to be at least a potential backup is Brady Cook. Athletic dual threat QB that can be a smart distributor in the right spot

I would consider the Georgia kid with the injured elbow. He is erratic but has a strong arm, size, and athleticism. He would be the perfect developmental prospect.

Keep an eye on Kyle McCord. Originally an Ohio State commit. That Syracuse team was under rated and all he did was produce.
McCord is the one I'm mostly watching because of his arm talent. What I primary look for in modern day QBs is arm talent.

It's why I'm not surprised Nix has turned out to be good - he made throws in college that made me think "dang, that is a big boy, NFL caliber throw".

Arm talent, processing speed, and ability to make plays under duress are things you're looking for in a modern NFL QB. The ability to throw off balance, from different angles, and not panicking when the play breaks down.

I see some of those traits in McCord. He reminds me of Jay Cutler. But if he cleans up some of his inconsistencies?... he could be really good.

What I really need is for someone to tell me why not to like Tommy Mellott so much, because I genuinely love his athletic ability at the position. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up running a 4.39 or something ridiculous at the combine. He just ran all over FCS defenses, and was unbeatable in Montana's gimmicky offense. But it's so hard to scout their offense because he rarely pushed the ball downfield - they ran a lot of gimmick read option stuff. But I've seen him throw some absolute piss missiles too.

QBs are THE hardest to scouting because of two big reasons:
  1. The competition they play against. Watching Shadeur Sanders light up North Dakota State is misleading. He (or almost any other QB) won’t be able to do the same against quality NFL talent.
  2. The talent they are surrounded by. Guys like Carson Beck at Georgia, or Quinn Ewers at Texas are surrounded by NFL talent. Sometimes they look better than they are.
I put a lot of stock on 4 areas:
  1. How well a QB reads defenses.
  2. How well he makes decisions under pressure.
  3. How accurate is he? You can’t teach accuracy. Lots of guys have strong arms. Look at their accuracy.
  4. How many games did he start in college? A guy who only started one season is usually not ready for the NFL. Most pro scouts put a lot of stock on having over 20 college starts.

I think every draft has a Brock Purty or Tony Romo. Finding him and getting opportunities are different matters. So much has to go wrong AND right. Wrong in the sense that he's usually buried at the bottom of the depth, so he's giving a lot of attention as a serious impact. Right in that IF/WHEN he gets an opportunity with starters, he needs to ball/show out. Coaching, timing, and talent are critical.......

As a OSU fan I completely agree with this. But Howard has looked pretty sharp the last few games.

No one talks about him. Maybe he would be worth chasing in FA. Just as a camp arm. He may surprise you never know. Not sure if he will get drafted.

I don't McCord qualifies on a Purdy because I see him as a mid round pick.

Tyler Shough may fit, transfer from Texas Tech to Louisville.

Dillion Gabriel maybe. Smaller, doesn’t have a big arm but is accurate and throws with anticipation. Also a ton of college starts.
Could turn out like Purdy if surrounded by good talent. Very smart and quick decision maker. He doesn't have a cannon, but his accuracy is excellent.

That's Purdy like, really good comp using Gabriel, I see some similarities.

If I'm Dallas I'd be ok with Gabriel in the 5th.
I’d be open…they just run such a gimmick offense at Oregon he’ll likely take some development time.
