Radio shock jock Don Imus, one of the early pioneers of his genre, died Friday less than two years after retiring, according to a family statement given to NBC New York.

He was 79.

The controversial morning personality’s last day on the radio was March 29 of last year. He announced Jan. 22 that he was retiring, telling fans: “Turn out the lights ... the party's over."

Well, I hate to hear that. I used to watch Imus in the morning years ago. Hate to hear that, retiring and then up and dying shortly after. Makes you wonder.

totally shocked.
I loved his show that was simulcast on msnbc back in the 90s or early 00s.
thought it was pretty cool when he built that ranch in NM for kids.

RIP Mr. Imus. I appreciated your highly entertaining radio broadcasts during many a commute. Your Jerry Jones impersonation was a side splitter. People quick to criticize you will hopefully take a little time to understand the passionate philanthropy that was such a big part of your life. You made life here a lot better for many.

A lot of people seem to go shortly after either retirement or losing their spouse. Their will to go on just evaporates or they no longer feel needed and fade.

A true legend and he opened the door to the other side for The Greaseman, Stern, etc. If you hadn't been suspended, you weren't worthy of the club. The magic was bringing humor with the shock and he was one of the best, some felt the very best.
