I have stopped caring about the size of player contracts. No one “deserves” $60 million to throw the ball, or $34 million to catch the ball each year. No one on the Cowboys current team is better than past players who made much much less. It is simply a change in market conditions.
When I graduated from high school, starting salaries for engineers were $18,000 - $22,000 per year. Now starting salaries are minimum $70,000. Are today’s engineers better than previous generations? No. It’s just that the market changed.
So, why should fans get caught up in salary levels for NFL players? Is it less “respectful” to pay Dak $40M per season vs. $60M per season? I think any fan would feel very respected with either salary.
Bottom line: we shouldn’t get too caught up in NFL economics. Instead we should only care about whether the Cowboys put a good team on the field. Do I care if they pay DaRon Bland, or replace him with Caelon Carson? Not really, as long as the Cowboys have a good secondary.
I get that fans get attached to players. But ultimately, it shouldn’t really matter to us. We’d like to see the Cowboys win another championship in our lifetimes. How they accomplish that, and who they decide to pay along the way really doesn’t matter. At least it doesn’t to me.
