Don't look now but this league seems to be gearing towards the run

I've noticed it the first few weeks of the season but now we are at week 6 and the trend is continuing......

Of course Mahomes and Allen are airing it out but the rest of the league for whatever reason doesn't seem to be following suit.

Especially in the NFC.

Packers and Bucc's appear to be struggling to air it out.

Giants and Eagles....two top 5 rushing offenses have the two best records in the NFC.

Look at the Falcons. 3-3....not a great record but who saw that? Who didn't think they would be the worst team in the NFC right? Surely didn't think they'd have the same record as the Buccaneers.

There are also some good rushing team with bad records. But what I'm not seeing is teams airing it out which as much success.

I say that to say this.......Cowboys are built to play this way. Solid rushing attack, solid defense....this is the year to take advantage. You don't need to score 40 points to beat the best teams in the league. Win the trenches and get off the field off of 3rd down and control the clock. Cowboys are BUILT for this very model and have had success with it under Rush until last night they tried to abandon it in the 1st half.

Yep.

The NFL has finally realized that defense is just as enjoyable for some fans.

Much less offensive production this year, across the board in the NFL.

I attribute this to population growth and the fact that defensive players are just more athletic nowadays than they've ever been. Just because there are so many freaking people.

Defenses got lighter, faster, playing more nickel and dime to combat the pass happy offenses that were fueled by rule changes that pushed passing.

The pendulum will swing back again if the league starts running more. Teams will get bigger in the front seven and then teams will start whipping the ball around the field more again.

We may be set up offensively to succeed in a league trending towards more running.

But our defense is set up to be a defense that defends the pass not stop the run.

true I noticed that and the teams playing better defense, and less points scored in most games, with many low score games.
This is one way around needing a franchise qb and 2 top wr. just run and pass short, good defense, dont make mistakes.

Cowboys could do it but with jerry and our coaches, dont count on it. Jerry likes passing, not running the ball. Mike will please jerry before
being a boring run team that is a winner.
When rush was 4-0 half the people here didnt like it, they wanted more passing and more points !!
Last nite kellen veered away from that run game and went back to passing, and the stupid pass play designs that dont suit rush, or even dak lol.
Dallas might have won that game if they had just run 35-40 times, and come into the game knowing they would have to dbl team that monster
in the middle !! It took them 1 half to figure that out. The guy is young, 6'6 and what 350 lbs and kellen and mike thought biadez could handle him alone ??

Coaching can win or lose games , and make players look good or bad.

That's why I'm hoping these games with Rush showed both Dak and Kellen that they can't be scared and start abandoning the run when they're not gashing them early on. Not every run is going to a home run hitter...you have to take those small gains and keep pounding away. A 3 yard run on 1st or 2nd down is NOT always bad.

true, and phil just showed other teams how to diffuse parsons and our pass rush.
Pass rush was our main weapon on defense. be interesting to see if other teams will use what phil did or not.

You know that's a good point. I'm still confused on our rush defense.

Are we saying we were bad against the run last night? It seemed like it during the game but I look at the box score and 40 carries for 140 yards sucks and I'd honestly take that if a team wants to do it.

Easy, because DC's finally figured out that a high octane passing O gives pass rushers an extra sec to get to QB, as they can just pin back their ears and go. Much easier to defend. And QB's are getting beat up all around the league, despite the nancy boy roughing rules, as that's how you beat high volume passing O's.

So you think this is something that will last all season? Giants and Eagles getting away with this is telling. If this lasts then the Cowboys need some in season help stopping the run. If a bargain can be had.

If Jalen Hurts was a more capable passer, they would stick him back to pass like they did in the beginning of last season (when they struggled). I don't think the pendulum is swinging.

That's the problem. I don't think it will. Last year what was the take with this team? Getting 3 receivers the football. It seems like it was always about the production of players. I don't like that talk. If you win who cares what the production is? The run will open up the pass and the stats will get there but it should get there naturally. Kellen is clueless and I'm starting to see why Dak bails out of some of those plays.

Since 1892, teams have always geared towards the run. Even in todays pass happy offenses you have to be able to run effectively in order to pass effectively.

Its still early to tell that's why I asked it but at the same time...why isn't it? A lot of these teams have no choice. The QB play is so bad. Mahomes and Allen don't have anything to really write home about at the position. Eagles, Giants, Cowboys, Browns, etc. all have star backs.

You are right. But we're seeing a little more than just run effectively. We're seeing teams try to actively lean on the run.

Those teams are doing so because of a QB weakness, WR weakness, defensive weakness or a combination of all 3. That has also been going on for decades.

The run promotes ball control which helps TOP which helps the defense. With a lack of elite QB's to go around it prevents air ball mistakes. It's back to football fundamentals since they realized a certain level of QB is needed for the high octane pass game....and that defense wins championships more often than not...it's the ever-present pendulum of act and react in the league.

The Cowboys definitely need help stopping the run....and we need an offensive coordinator who is not an idiot that abandons the run. If he constantly goes 3 and out with his pass game and abandoning the run the Defense is on the field longer and gets exhausted. He acts like there's only one side of football rather than it being a multifaceted game where each affects the other.

You aren't lying. It sucks to have a on the job training OC who abandons the run and then you can't stop the run consistently.
