PHILADELPHIA (Aug. 30, 2004) -- Defensive end Hugh Douglas agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, returning to the team after a one-year hiatus.

After being cut earlier in the day by the Jacksonville Jaguars, Douglas agreed to a one-year contract, said his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.

"Hugh desperately wanted to come back to Philadelphia," Rosenhaus said. "He didn't want to waste any time. He's looking forward to getting back to the fans he loves so much."

The team confirmed the signing late Monday.

Douglas, 33, signed a five-year, $27 million free-agent contract with the Jaguars that included a $6 million signing bonus following the 2002 season, but was cut after getting just 31 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks last year.

During his time in Philadelphia, Douglas was the anchor to one of the league's top defenses, and the Eagles hope he can provide stability for an injury-depleted defensive line. Philadelphia lost starting defensive end N.D. Kalu to a season-ending knee injury two weeks ago.

"With the injury to N.D. Kalu, he's got a great opportunity to fill a hole," Rosenhaus said.

Rosenhaus said Douglas will fly to Philadelphia on Tuesday to sign the contract.

don't know what he's got left, but due to injuries, a good signing by the eagles, who have nothing to lose.

Man, bet the Jags feel robbed by Hugh. The guy gave them absolutely nothing at all for the money they paid him. For league minimum, good signing by the Eagles.

I used to make fun of Eagles fans for being too cheap to keep their core intact but so far, it looks like they've made some smart decisions. Trotter was a bust for the Skins, especially considering his contract. Douglas was a legendary bust for Jacksonville. The Eagles get them back with their diminshing skills and don't have to pay a dime. Maybe some of this year's cuts (Duce, Vincent, Taylor) will finally hurt them.

Taylor is a NB in Seattle... :D

Duce and Vincent have been fine.

I think both Vincent and Staley will do just fine this year. Duce may make Bettis a better player too, just as a motivator.

I think Taylor will be the bust, because of attitude and injuries.

The funniest part about all of this: the cap hits of Douglas and Trotter (this year) are smaller for the Eagles than they are for the Jaguars and Commanders respectively. Next year, if the Eagles don't resign them, the Eagles will have 0 cap hit, while the deadskins and jaguars keep paying (cap-wise).

I thought with Derek Burgess and McDougle, you guys already had decent depth at DE behind Kearse and Kalu. Will Douglas get a lot of PT or will he simply be a situational pass-rusher/5th DE?

Kalu is out for the year.

He may start, but he was brought in for depth.
