FRISCO, Texas – No matter how you picture it, the pressure is on. It's the final seconds prior to the opening selection of the 2021 NFL Draft. At the moment, you hold the tenth overall selection but need more than just that pick to feel better about your roster, especially when your franchise quarterback is still not under contract. Suddenly, the phone rings with the Miami Dolphins on the other line in search of a quarterback and willing to give up multiple first round picks to find one. What do you do? Stay true to the plan you've built for years? Or pivot on a dime to build a new future?

Look if Dak thinks he is worth 40m. And he hasn't signed by draft day.

I would entertain these three deals:

Jets: Dak and two 4ths
For Sam Darnold, Q. WILLIAMS the current second rounder and 3rd rounder.
Then flip Sam Darnold CB Brown to let's say the Falcons for a 1st and 2nd rounder

Dolphins pick 3 18 and 36 plus Tua
For Dak our Comp 3rd rounder and 5th rounder

Or
Panthers Dak and a future 3rd and 5th
Dallas recieves 1st and 2nd plus Derrick brown and a future 2nd rounder

I would entertain all these trades.

I'm 100% ok with keeping Dak

I would also draft Mac Jones if daks traded

If you make the hypothetical trade with Miami they talked about and Zach Wilson falls to 3, you take him and then have Tua and Wilson battle it. You'd still have 4 years of affordable QB from Tua and all 5 for Wilson. You can trade the other guy next year when the QB class appears to be extremely weak.

You still draft who you wanted all along at 10 and you have another 1st to grab another defensive starter.

Are you a better team? No.

But you hope like hell you found your next QB and you use the difference between their contracts and Dak's to add defensive impact players. That new QB inherits a great O Line (if healthy) and great offensive weapons.

Tua's 2021 cap hit is $1.986M. Wilson's would be about $6.2, so combined that's $8.2M for QB versus the $38M for Dak's 2nd year tag.

This all assumes two big factors.

Dak isn't budging on a long contract, thus allowing him to work out a trade with another team.

and
Wilson slips past the Jets and is available at 3.

I don't dislike Justin Fields or Trey Lance, but I'm not making either of them the 3rd overall pick at this point.

Remember, you are most likely trading whoever doesn't win the competition next off-season for a probable 1st round pick, and at that point, Tua might be completely healthy.

I would suspect that if Miami needs a QB they'd take the best one at 3. Why would they not take a QB at 3 instead hoping the guy they like falls to us (or someone around us) so they can trade back up with their 18th pick?

But if that scenario played out, I'd move down to 18, pick up maybe the the 35th pick (I think they have that one) and roll from there.

EDIT: My bad, the premise was the Dolphins giving up their two first rounders for Dak. LOL. Me no smart.

I tend to think like this as well. If there are still road blocks to getting Dak under a decent enough deal, take the 3rd and 18th picks and Tua and go from there. Shoot, maybe you can then flip Tua, the 3rd and another pick to Jax for #1 and get Lawrence (LOL, yeah, yeah, wishful thinking).

Maybe Urban is enamored with Fields, for example. So you give him the third and the 18th to get to #1 and get Lawrence. Meyer is happy then getting Fields at 3 and having another first round pick.

Why would the Falcons want Sam Darnold?

Um Darnolds 23yrs old why not?
Jets are and always where poop.
They have terrible management.

Poor drafting.
I would want Darnold if I needed a QB.
Who ever gets him depending perfect fits Falcons and 49ers are gonna get a great QB

We shall see. MAC JONES IS A GUN SLINGER.
I e Mahomes esk.
He is no Patrick Mahomes but he has some of the same traits.
Wilson reminds me of a Eli Manning with alittle more scramble

He's not even close to Mahomes even in his traits.

I fully expect Jerry to be very active in trying to deal UP at the beginning of round two.

The question is for who.

Most of us would say that's the prime spot to grab a safety, but I'm not so sure that's what the team does.

They obviously don't value the position while making their board first of all.

Inevitably there will be someone with a first round grade that slips....and that may be the target.

If they go TE or OL at 10.....I would expect Jerry to attempt to get that DT with a high grade....as an example, and safety gets pushed until late yet again....yielding a guy they are hesitant to use even on ST.

These are absolutely terrible deals for the Cowboys, especially since you want to draft Jones.

Unless their name is Aaron Donald, defensive tackles have almost no value in a trade for Dak.

That makes a ton of sense actually.

Miami is building a nice team but if Tua isn't the real deal they are screwed.

It probably won't happen, but I can recall one HC/GM that hedged his big QB bet with another....Jimmy Johnson.

You can make the argument as to who the team lost out on by adding Walsh (a very significant player)....but it didn't at all matter vs knowing you've got your QB.

Not to mention how much more significant QB is today as opposed to 1989.

In what world would you put Mac Jones in the same sentence as Mahomes?
