Eagle's gameplan on defense

I don't really expect the Eagles to blitz us alot, and force our running game to beat them. While the O-Line has been good, the jury is probably still out on them. I think Jim Johnson will depend on Jeremiah Trotter and his new D-Linemen to step up and try to win this one.

I would defend against Bledsoe differently. I've often questioned Bledsoe's ability to read defenses and find the open man consistently. The Eagles would be best served to throw a variety of coverages at Bledsoe...more like a chess match than a grudge match (aka blitzing). However, the Eagles are hamstrung by the fact that they lack healthy DBs. Therefore, they will have no choice but to blitz to protect their secondary.

They will have to pick their poison. More guys in coverage will open up the run (which BP likes). More guys committing to the blitz will open up the pass (which BP also likes, but less than the run).

IMO, I would love for them to drop more guys in coverage and let JJ and MBIII run wild. We consume the clock this way, shorten the game, and keep McNabb and Westbook off the field.

Jim Johnson blitzes. That's just what he does. I would be shocked if he didn't do it early and often.

They will blitz constantly. The key stat in the game, the one that determines the winner, will be the ratio of the time Bledsoe spends on his feet to the time he spends on the ground.

dump pass to a boatload of options, and Bledsoe will be a hero. this is all based on him having his head ready for it. Witten and Fasano need to be ready for "smoke" coming their way

In all seriousness, I think this is the type of game where BP really wanted the 2 TE offense. If Philly starts blitzing relentlessly, I believe this is where we really see all the advantages of running 2 TE. We can flank them out, then put the back in motion out of the backfield, and move to 5 wide on their base defense, and back them off their blitzing.

The Eagles have to get to Bledsoe early and often. That is the only way they can win. So if they cant get there with 4, they will send 5. If cant get there with 5, they will send 6. The onlyu way.

Test his stitches? Not sure I ever heard of someone being exploited because of stitches.

With as well as Kosier has been pulling its going to be hard for them to just bum rush the Dallas up the gut, JJ will eat them up on the edges.

He tried that last year and paid dearly, they got toasted in the first game and everyone talks about Roy's big TD but that was setup by a long TD pass to Glenn when Philly brought the house and left Glenn in single coverage. Yea he loves to bring the noise but he had better be smart about it this week or Philly is going to get blown out.

I too worry about the beagle blitzing up the middle. If they do them run Tyson on swings and dump off to TO and Glenn.

The Eagles have not been blitzing much this year (on average 10% of the time, only 5% last week against GB) because of the team approach to the front 4 of the DL (swaping out the entire 4 D linemen between series). They have been very effective with rushing just 4 and playing cover two in the secondary. As a matter of fact, they are among the leaders in sacks this year while using only 4 D linemen. They have been very impressive so far this year. If you saw the GB game this week you would have noticed that Farve just barely got a 3-4 step drop before he fired the ball. This is gonna be one hell of a battle folks.
