Eliud Kipchoge sets new marathon world record in Berlin

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge smashed the marathon world record by clocking a time of two hours one minute 39 seconds in Berlin.

The 33-year-old took nearly one minute 20 seconds off the previous best, which was set by compatriot Dennis Kimetto when he ran 2:02:57 in Berlin in 2014.

"I lack words to describe this day," said Kipchoge. "I am really grateful, happy to smash the world record."

I went to NBC and watched the end of the race, it boggles my mind that a guy can run that speed and just stay there for 2 hours. 13 mph is practically a sprint, I could do it for probably a block or two. Just in the little blurb they showed, which was the final minute or so, I couldn't have kept up with him. And that's with him having run for 2 hours and me starting in the final minute. I still couldn't keep that pace for a minute or two.

It's just staggering what people are capable of.
