[Disclaimer: These are the musings of an extremely frustrated, desperate Cowboys fan who knows his team should be at least 9-2, if not for the failed feet of our kicking staff.]

The NFL has got to put a stop to the way inconsistent kicking has affected not only the Cowboys, but a bunch of football teams this year. Something has got to be done...and here's my solution. Don't be upset that you didn't come up with it first. Its a gift. :D

Of course no system is perfect, but I think this one would work if it was fine-tuned a little bit.

Here are the basics of my proposal:

Allow teams that score a field goal to save the three points and not use them in the current game (if they so desire) in order to have them available in order to transfer the 3 points into next game's score.

The details:

1) The field goal can only be used if it is not added to the score of the current game. The team would then kickoff to the other team w/out taking the points.

2) In order to use the 3 points, the offense must be inside the range of the previous week's field goal, they can't be on their own ten yard line.

3) A team can only use the 3 points with more than 3 minutes remaining in the game (to allow the other team a chance to come back should the 3 points tie or give them the lead).

4) The team can only use the points if they have at least one timeout left.

5) Taking the points also takes away one timeout.

6) Only 3 points can be used, no more, no less.

7) The opposing team gets the ball back at their 30-yard line.

Example:

Team A kicks a 40-yard field goal in the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter to take a 20-3 lead in a game. Instead of taking the points, they save the points for potential use next game so the score stays 17-3.

In the next game, they trail their opponent by 1 point and drive down to the opponents 15 yard line. It is 4th and 5 so they decide they need to kick a field goal. Since they are w/in 40 yards, instead of risking a miss, they decide to use the 3 points they saved from last week's game. They are charged a timeout and the other team gets the ball back at the spot of the ball.

Conclusion

I know that these are the musings of a crazy, frustrated fan. I'm desperate and don't know if I can live through another nail biter where Cundiff misses to seal our fate.

While there is no way the NFL would adopt something like this, it kills me to see the team struggle and claw and do what it takes to win and one guy comes in and misses a field goal to lose/not win the game.

I guess it would be easier to find a solid kicker...wherever they are.

Thank God for Jay Feely.

How about we take them out completely. Make teams go for 2 after every touch down. Instead of a goal post, have a pole with a large ring on top of it with a diameter of about 5 ft. If the team wants to get 3 points, the QB needs to throw it threw the ring. We can keep punters to punt and kickoff, just get rid of the FG kicker. :D

What a silly idea, lol.

So, in a game you're going to win, kick as many field goals as possible, to stockpile points for a game you're losing?

That would make for some weird games. Could be fun.

How about we rely on Bill Parcells to truly do something about it? He seems to make it appear that he doesn't like Cundiff. He made comments that implied that he wanted a better kicker. Yet, he has never brought in a so called better kicker on to the team. Everyone knew that Cortez was not better than Cundiff. If Billy doesn't get injured, Cortez is cut. I like Cundiff and hopes he steps up his game because I really don't see Bill going out to find someone else that we can all rely on. He is the best option for the rest of this season. Maybe that is not a good thing. I feel better with him on the team than Cortez or Suisham. After this weekend, there are not a lot of better options.

This is a much simpler and better idea. Use kickers for kickoffs and remove FGs all together. Brilliant!

I'm not ready to put the difference between our 7-4 and a 9-2 record solely on the shoulders (or should I say legs?) of our kickers. Last I knew this is a team game and it takes more than one to tango.

Cortez was pitiful and granted if he makes the kick we don't have a possible tie game. However Bledsoe never allowed us the opportunity to even get that far, throwing a pick setting up the field goal for a Seattle win. And our defense still had not learned the art of playing a full 60 minutes, allowing the 'Hawks to score in a hurry to tie the game. Plus Cortez wasn't the only one sent packing from our kicking team....the long snapper getting the "boot" previously. And I'm still not settled on the Canuck's abilities. We should nickname Romo "The Pretzel" as often as he has to swivel and reach back to his right to get the snap.

The Denver game isn't anywhere near Cundiff's responsibility in my mind. Yes, he left 3 points on the field. But refresh my memory....who was it that gift wrapped 7 points to the Broncos on an overthrown pass out in the flat? Oh yeah.....our quarterback. Bledsoe doesn't spot the Broncs that 7, which is obviously much more damaging than a missed 3, we don't need the FG. And then 2 plays into OT our defense, having stopped Denver's running game all day, takes the play off. Never allowing our offense a crack at the win.

Nope. Not gonna stick any of our losses on the kickers. ESPECIALLY not the Denver game.

Too complicated. I just think you slip LA a few extra bucks on the old game check and put him in charge of the kickers. Eventually, it would work itself out.

I've thought the same thing before. Not a bad idea...But the NFL would never go for it.

And it doesn't have to be for two...It could be for one just like the extra point.

If you want two you could elect to do that but you would have to start from the 10 yard line or something like that.

I know radical idea's for the NFL = Will not happen.

I meant the traditional "Go for 2" method. However, I also thought about having the QB chuck in their from about the 7 yd line, but too much risk to the QB. Sounds more like the XFL than the NFL.

Geez what a wacky idea?!?!?!?

Leave the rules alone...

As far as the QB throwing the ball through the hoop thing... that's fine and dandy in a dome... what are you going to do about wind... say in Soldier Field??

I said on Sunday and I'll say it again...robots.

If them Japanese fellers can make robots do the Raise the Roof dance, they can make 'em kick field goals.

Or just give the team 3 points if they're close enough to the end zone and the weather's nice.

An on-field conversation in a distant NFL future:

Player on the NY Football Giants: "The Sun's low. It's not too windy. Yeah, We'll give it to you. You probably woulda made it back in the old days when everyone used those kicker people. Ya don't even have to use the robot. You're better than us anyway."

Player on the Dallas "Quadrant M's Team" Cowboys: "omg! I forgot about those -- what were they called? -- please kickers. Jerry Jones' cryogenically frozen head was telling me about how the Cowboys had 104 years of terrible kickers after their one dude made the Hall of Fame. What was his name? Jose Quartez...or something."

If you really want to take some of the problems out of the kicking game, give the ball back to the kickers to do with as they please during the game (but only during the game).

Let 'em keep it warm, let 'em try to muscle some of the stiffness out.

Kicking is 95% mental. Even if they only believe what they're doing helps they will kick better.
