Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan wants Elam to control the secondary, since he has a good understanding of the 3-4 defensive scheme.

"He's smart, he’s consistent, [and] he’s conservative in his play style," Ryan said after Thursday's walkthrough. "We don’t like to give up the big home runs. He's that safety blanket back there [and] he understands what we’re looking for and he understands why we call things and when we call them. A great person and a helluva of a football player."

"He's very comfortable with this scheme," Jason Garrett said of Elam, who's expected to arrive here today. "He's a veteran safety and he's played in this scheme and played in this league, a lot of starts and a lot of snaps and he's a good football player. He's not one of those guys who wows you necessarily but he's the kind of guy you want playing safety for you. A great communicator and he understands what we want to do on the defensive side of the ball."

amazing that we did not NEED him when he was here? Someone help me remember why he did not make the team?

DC.COM Blog: Late-Addition Elam Shouldn’t Be Behind

Secondary coach Dave Campo said Elam’s understanding will be an asset to the other players as well.

“(The safeties) have to know the scheme because they run the defense along with the linebackers,” Campo said. “He brings that to the table right from the very beginning. And of course, him not being here is not drastic for him because he already knows the terminology.”

I think Parcells kept an outside linebacker named Justin Rogers instead.

He was only here his rookie season. I know it is hard to believe but players something learn and improve past their rookie year

Wade was the one to bounce Elam for Courtney Brown.

Right, but in his second year it wasn't necessarily apparent that he was starting material. Although, I believe Parcells mentioned he might.

Parcells liked him alot...One of his diamond in the rough type prospects.

I personally thought he showed enough to stick with the team, but teams have to make tough choices on cuts, and that's what happened. As an UDFA he was fighting an uphill battle.
