WASHINGTON -- The Justice Department wants to know why the NCAA doesn't have a college football playoff system and says there are "serious questions" about whether the current format to determine a national champion complies with antitrust laws.

Critics who have urged the department to investigate the Bowl Championship Series contend it unfairly gives some schools preferential access to the title championship game and top-tier end-of-season bowls.

Can't get any worse than it is now. I mean a team can go undefeated for three straight years and isn't eligible for a chance at a national title, yet a team that has two losses (like a USC, Flordia, Alabama, Ohio State) can be.

Why not? The FBS or Division 1A has too many teams right now with over a 100. That needs to be chopped down to create a super division.

Of course it does... and the NCAA is arrogant enough to openly flaunt it giving only certain conferences the ability to even contend for the National Championship...

Tell the late, great Don Haskins that a small, relatively unknown school has no chance to win it all...

I am all for a NCAA playoff system but I am 100% opposed to the government sticking its nose into it.

I wish they'd get to a playoff system. It would be so much better to crown a real national champion instead of allowing a couple teams to play cause a computer and some writers said they should.
