Romo Talks About Father's Cancer

I was in the middle of talking to Tony Romo about his father, Ramiro's, recent diagnosis of prostate cancer this afternoon when about 30 reporters showed up at his locker. His parents broke the news to him a few days after the Bears game last month, and he said he simply gave his father a hug and started praying for him.

Ramiro, 50, is in the process of seeking a second opinion, and he's secured the numbers for two of the top specialists in the nation.

"You love your Dad," Romo said Friday in the locker room. "You just want him to be alright. It's just part of getting older. It's a step in the path of life."

Asked if the news had affected his play, Romo said, "Football's football. When you're on the field, that's all you think about."

Ramiro and wife Joan will be attending Sunday's game at Texas Stadium.

Cancer is scary. Motivation to play well, or distraction?

I've heard that they caught the cancer early so he should be okay with the right treatment. Supposedly there will be an operation in about a month or so. Interesting to read he's going to get a second opinion from 1-2 top doctors in the country. Better believe it helps to have a star NFL QB for a son to get that kind of medical attention. Wouldn't be surprised if Jerry somehow keeping close track; he sure doesn't want anything to upset Romo and besides Jerry is a good guy who looks out for his players.

50 is VERY young to be getting that - that's not a step in life, maybe at 70 , this is very unfortunate for the Romo family.

Much like we banded together on behalf of a threatened opponent I feel it only appropriate to afford the same sincerity and thoughtfulness toward our own in their time of great need.

Death is an outrage and prayerfully the Romo family will be saved of its treacherous sting from this horrible disease I have firsthand experience with.

Keep Mr. Romo and the entire Romo clan in your prayers and if the opportunity presents itself let us convey a sense of community and compassion to them.
