Tony Romo, Scott Linehan get acquainted
January, 29, 2014

By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas -- Quarterback Tony Romo and new playcaller Scott Linehan met for the first time on Tuesday in what the Dallas Cowboys hope will become a prosperous relationship.

“Obviously creating an environment for your quarterback to play well is something we all think is important,” Coach Jason Garrett said. “We take great pride in that over the last seven years with this system and what we’re trying to do with our football team. Tony did get a chance to visit with Scott today and we think that’s a positive thing. Again to have those open lines of communication with our quarterback is a good thing. We’ve always thought it was a good thing.”

The Cowboys coaches are beginning what Garrett calls the “first phase” of the offseason, breaking down the season and what went right and wrong and how to fix things in 2014. With Romo recovering from back surgery, he should be involved in that process as well and will continue to have a say in the game planning.

Garrett sounded as if he will take even a further step back on offense altogether in 2014.

Sorry JG your system the last 7 years is what's wrong with this football team and it won't change until you're gone. That's a fact

How in the world is the offensive system what's wrong with this football team. Do you actually believe that, or do you just really not like the coach and so you want the problem to be the offensive system? How can you look at our pass defense being bottom-10 in the league three years running for three 8-8 squads, read the countless posts that explain the significance of passing game efficiency, look at Romo and this offense's efficiency, and actually think the problem is so obviously on offense that it has to be a fact, because having a wrong opinion is somehow insufficient in this regard?

Garrett said the Cowboys will return to the structure they had when he was the playcaller, which means Linehan could be on the field during games.
If Linehan is on the "field" sideline and is the play-caller, then he will obviously be the one talking to Romo on the headset. I guess that Callahan and Wilson can stay in the booth.

Excuse me, but I've been pounding the pavement about passing efficiency you can read my countless debates over it. Yes I firmly believe that his "system/scheme" is a huge issue with this football team. Yes I have a problem with the lack of balance this team has and the way it runs the offense inside out and through the TE. The defense has had many limitations and injuries and because of that you adjust the offense and the game plan to compensate for those issues. But our "coach" doesn't seem to grasp that. But go ahead and think that everything is peachy and that this offense isn't an issue.

I will. At least we seem to be on the same page that we should fix the bad pass defense.

Really? You don't think the scheme and offense are an issue? Really?

The Cowboys offense was ranked in the top 10 and the Cowboys defense was ranked near the bottom in 2013.

There is a high probability the the Cowboys would have been in the playoffs if the defense had just been ranked in the middle.

I don't, no. I think our offense this past year was good enough to compete in the postseason with a healthy Romo. I certainly think this offense was better than either of the offenses that played in the NFC Championship game.

Now that doesn't mean you should ignore it should the opportunity be there to upgrade some spots in the offseason, but I don't see the offense as a problem whatsoever. More like a fan crutch for those who can't admit the real issues with the team.

It's one of many issues with the team. That's a given, but what's funny is after the 12 season everyone was upset because the offense failed and we made RR the escape goat, but left the Buffon and his weak offense slide. His offense leaves a lot to be desired. I don't agree with the other offenses were not as good. There is not a chance this team could put a game plan together that would allow them to compete in those weather conditions. They are not a tough team at all and it starts and ends with JJ and JG. I envy the Seahawks and how they play physical football I envy the Broncos with how the offense is designed to the strengths of the players with all the up tempo and quick passing game so that PM gets rid of the ball within 2 secs. Sorry this offense leaves a lot to be desired.

Dallas was ranked 16th on offense not top 10

If he's on the sideline then I suspect he won't be calling plays. You can't see the defense as well from there.

I gotta say I really like Jason Garrett personally and I always always wanted him to succeed, I think he would be the perfect face of the franchise, but when I read quotes like this it's just such perfect coach speak and Captain Obvious stuff. I know he has to say something and dealing with the media gets redundant but I just wish he wouldn't be so robotic.

I was never a big Parcells fan but no doubt he changed things for the better with the Cowboys and he imposed his personality on the team and media. Based on this article, I can hear him now...

"What kind of question is that? Do I think it's a good thing? Let me ask you something, why wouldn't our QB have open lines of communication with the guy calling the plays? Are you not gonna talk with your editors about the stories you write? I mean really...next question..."

Do I think we need to run the ball more. Yes! But I still blame the D more.

Our PPG, Sc%, RZ% and TO Diff were good enough although they'd be better with a better D, I suspect more running, and better play calling. Austin out hurt us badly IMO. The vast problem was the defense and its likely to be better but not good enough unless we are very lucky and creative in talent acquistion.
