IRVING -- Defensive end Marcus Spears said he understands why coach Wade Phillips will catch heat for giving the players Monday off following their victory against the Falcons on Sunday.

The Cowboys practiced only twice two weeks ago during the bye week, and then they returned to their normal four days of workouts last week in preparation for the Atlanta game.

Spears said sometimes coaches have to throw players a bone to keep them motivated and fresh throughout the season.

"If we went into practice or if we didn't, there will still be something for somebody to gripe about," said Spears, who will go hunting on his day off. "I think Wade and the coaching staff are running this thing how they think they should run it. I guess outside opinion, it really doesn't matter."

After the game Sunday, there was a loud cheer from the locker room when Phillips announced to the team that Monday would be an off day.

45 players showed up anyway and Wade expects more...

For real?

If that happened, I wonder if the people who are ****ting on Wade for giving them the day off will praise the team for their dedication.

Hmmmmmm...

All the gym rats in as well as a few getting in some study for Seattle. I hope they don't take them for granted. They have a pretty good QB.

I believe thats what I heard wade say on the conference just now. Also said 'it is a day off but its not - its an unwritten rule.'

Wade is the new Rodney.. I tell ya I get no respect..

Lots of coaches give players an occasional Monday off after a big win. Some do it more than others. It's not like Wade gives them Monday off after every win.

Last year, the Dolphins started 2-4. Then they came from behind to beat Buffalo, and Sparano gave them the next Monday off. All they did from that point on was go 8-1 and win their division.

And usually, when coaches give players a Monday off, most of them show up to work out anyway.

Good to hear lots of them showed up any way. I don't really see a huge problems with having a monday off, didn't Jimmy used to do the same thing?

so my question, since monday is a day off and the cowboys players generally get tuesday off as i understand it, will the cowboys get tuesday off too?
does anyone know?

Hey we won, so if Wade feels like giving them a day off, then fine by me.

How on earth does Marcus Spears hunt? You can see him from space and his tree stand would have to be a full tree house.:laugh2:

He dresses up like a deer they just mistake him for part of the heard :laugh2:

How does anything Spears said turn into "Day off is no big deal"?

That's one twisted headline. Calvin Watkins just needs to jump off a cliff or something.
