So I opened a yogurt today...it expired back in January.

It looked and smelled fine, but I tossed it (it was hidden behind a bunch of stuff in my fridge).

How long DOES this stuff keep for?

i couldnt tell you exactly

but any milk product, i would not use beyond the expiry date because it has the potential to go bad very quickly

In Health class we were told most products are good one week beyond the expiration date. I doubt milk would last that long though.

I am sure this is ok, but my motto is throwing things out a day or 2 before the expiration date.

Food I generally toss after the expiration date. Milk OTOH, I'll drink it if it doesn't smell or taste sour.

It was magical. It was perfectly intact. Smelled like regular yogurt, and had no separation/discoloration.

I almost ate it.

Nature at work, bro.

Most of the time, the date is a "sell by" date, not an "expiration" date.

Dependent on the food stuff, you have anywhere from months to years after the date to consume the product safely.

Taste it. If it tastes okay then it's probably okay. However I tend to abide by the "When in doubt, toss it out" theory when it comes to food. I'm not getting food poisoning over a 3 dollar tub of yogurt, that's for sure.

Dairy products are one of the few things for which the listed expiration date should be followed because, depending on how it was stored before you bought it, milk based products often go bad even before the expiration date because of the ease with which it spoils. Almost everything else will keep long after it has "expired". Stuff like ketchup, mustard, jam, dressings, etc. are good months and sometimes even years after their listed expiration dates assuming they are stored properly.

Sounds like some pretty strong preservatives in there. Absolutely give it the boot, though. Not worth the possible results.

Yeah but yogurt is basically curdled/old milk, right?

Next time I'll give it a taste, if there is a next time.

I ate some old yogurt once. Stuff really messed me up. I went nuts and almost ate my brother's face....

Did you mix it with bath salts?

:D

I'm sure somewhere there is a public health conspiracy to be found in all of this, but I'm not nearly bitter or trivial enough to care.
