I know free agency isn't a significant aspect of what we do in Dallas lol but when you look at how they roster build its obvious we can use some adjustments in our approach.
I feel like in their current approach:
1.) Delay Extensions
2.)Focus trying to resign our cheap free agents and let the priorities go to free agency and we bank on comp picks.
3.) Bargain shop to ensure you get comp picks.
4.) Draft for needs
5.) Bargain shop again.
6.) Extend players and overpay you didnt want to pay first
We end up with 15-20+ free agents bc we will shop for one year deals with low cost or injured players. You only end up with 4 comp picks 5th and below for us and even with the success we have had in later rounds, they have struggled lately. You still have significant holes to fill bc of how many 1 year contracts they create but not always enough talent to replace guys you are too cheap to resign and then you let the market set 3-4 times before you end up signing your stars and then you have to overpay then claim, we broke. SMH
I would like to see them:
1.) Focus on their immediate extensions first: Parsons, Bland and then you can lock down your players and focus on your core. You also in cases free up money on the cap going into FA.
2.) Focus on resigning your FA next: Make a decision on who you want to target and the others go. Osa, Lewis, Bell, Hoffman, Lance bring back. If you lose them in free agency then you get some comps but try to bring back your priorities. Leave yourself some room to either use comp picks to get vets/salary or go into FA and make one or two acquisitions of meaning and then low cost shop.
3.) Draft, hit the UDFA.
4.) Hit Free Agency again for low cost to mid tier shopping.
