Firefox question

A customer asked me this question and I honestly don't know the answer. I looked for it for a little while but didn't find anything obvious, so I thought perhaps someone here might know the answer.

The question concerns how much information Firefox shares between tabs. Specifically, she wants to know if her browsing history in one tab is visible to sites she visits in another tab. (I didn't ask what she was browsing or why she was concerned. )

If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Are you asking if you have two tabs open and are browsing in both, that if you close one does the remaining tab have the history from the closed tab?

If so the answer is yes, it does.

Without seeing the 'source code', it would be difficult to know if tabs share information between each other.

I would think that when a 'new tab' is created, it is just a new tab or web page that is totally independent of any of the other tabs.

Also, even though you can create multiple tabs, you are still sharing the save address bar, so you are going to have the same history, for all the tabs.

I am just making a guess here but I think all history/cache/cookies are collected into the same areas no matter how many tabs you have open. So my guess is yes if you have multiple tabs open, what goes from one tab will show up in the history on another...at the very least I know it does when you go to put something in the address bar.

If she is worried about someone seeing something she sees on another tab, she could always use another browser such as google chrome, opera or other browser.

Or she can set up her firefox to complete clear all data each time she closes it or do it manually before she closes it.

I am not sure why she is hiding, or thinks she is hiding, something in one tab vs another tab in the same browser at the same time it is opened...that kind of sounds like one of those ID10T errors to but again who knows.

chrome's a worse offender from what people have told me, they definitely collect info on what you do.

I think even using another browser would collect the information somewhere though, wouldn't it? It has to be stored on your HD, right?

You can use CSS to view someones history from any tab.

Send her here to learn more.

What do you expect. Google makes it's money off knowing what it's users are doing. They provide search so that it knows what your searching for. Thats how it sends you ads tailored to what you are looking for.

Sure unless you clean it after each use. But if she is just trying to hide what is on one browser (say a husband or boyfriend going in and looking at her browser history) when she is done.

She could install a different browser, not put it on the desktop or quick launch bar and use it for whatever she is trying to hide.

Now with the wife and I we are not trying to hide stuff from each other but I don't want all the bookmarks and toolbars that she uses so she sticks with IE and I use firefox. That way she has the toolbars, bookmarks, starting page setup how she wants it. I have mine setup how I want it.

The woman in question could get a program like windows washer to clear out her history, cookies, tempfiles/cache and set it to the bleach option where it overwrites the area a few times if she is that worried about someone finding out what she is doing, but then again if someone is really watching what she is doing they could be using a keystroke recording program that will record each keystroke she makes and logs it so they can go in and look at it later.

Yes, everything is shared across tabs.

All of your history etc. But also session information.

For example I use Firefox at work. One of the sites we use requires a log in. I only have to log in once and I can then open a hundred tabs and they will all be logged in and ready to work, I don't have to log in each time I open a tab. The login info is not saved though, if I close Firefox and open it back up and go to the site, I'll have to log in again. (though Firefox does give the option to save passwords..)

This is cookies that do this. As long as the site knows the name of the cookie (many times, it's name is the session ID), it can access it. (ie, access your session information)

How dirty all of your minds are. :D
She's probably surfing at work and doesn't want IT or someone else to find out.

On firefox click on tools , go down to "private browsing" click on that and read what it says and see if that is what she needs.

I was using Chrome last month when I googled a certain Oreck vacuum cleaner my mother was looking for. A few days later, ads for that exact same model started surfacing at a number of my favorite websites. I don't believe in coincidences.

You should STOP Googling Bob Sacamano, you'll sleep better at night.
