10. DALLAS. Another trade-up spot for a QB-seeking team if one’s still available. Said one NFC coach: “I can’t see how the Cowboys pass up [Northwestern tackle] Rashawn Slater if he’s there. That offensive line is declining fast.”

• “DeVonta Smith is one of the best football players I’ve ever seen,” said one GM. “I know he scares teams with his size [170 pounds], but his hands and his presence and how smart he plays . . . I think he’ll have an incredible career.”

I couldn't be too mad if we picked Slater. Just a damn good football player and I see no way he fails short of injury. There's like a 95% chance that he'll have a great career.

Horn would scare me. Same as Slater, I couldn't be too mad about the pick because we need a CB in the worst way, but I'd have a sinking feeling if he was our pick. His grabbiness and reactive vs proactive (eg Surtain) style open the door for him to get beat an absolute crap-ton in the pros.

I used to think this was an easy pick. Surtain

But I actually lean toward wanting Slater now. Think about getting another Tyron Smith at this point in this draft. That will have a way bigger impact than a corner.

Agree. I used to hate those picks when I was young and rambunctious in my early 40s and wanted flash..lol..but the young 50s guy wants stability in the line and thinks guys like this are the safest pick...especially when the draft is loaded with DBs and LBs you can get in the 2nd and 3rd

My thing on Slater is you got to hope he plays LT in the pros at one point.

Not in 2021 with Smith still here but at 10th overall you have to get a guy like Zach Martin or Nelson if he's a career guard.

Even if he carves out a nice career at RT that's a rich price to pay for a righty QB IMO.

Welcome to the other side.

Good points however I look at it this way. Drafting for need the last several years has gotten us Taco, LVE and Hill. One flat out bust, one on the cusp bust, and one LB with a chronic neck condition. We didn't need a WR last year but Cee Dee looked to be a high impact player who was unlikely to bust and I still think so. I was happy with the pick for those reasons. I see the same thing with Slater. A non bust who is likely to be highly productive for a decade. We cant blow this pick after some of the poor recent drafts.

I see your point, but with the Taco and LVE picks, was it the draft for need issue or was it a scouting issue(general comment)?

When we drafted Taco, Watt was still on the board(as we've all read 500 times lol). The rumor was that the coaches wanted Taco but scouts wanted Watt. Had we gone with Watt, still on the drafting for need, would that been a bad decision? IIRC Rod didn't think he could play with his hand in the dirt...

LVE was pimped hard by McClay. In that draft class, there was still Evans and Leonard who were drafted in the later first/beginning of the 2nd round. Now, no one really had Darius Leonard as a 1st rounder, but he certainly has played excellent since coming into the league. But, was this a draft for need issue, or a scouting issue? Cause it was a heavy LB draft class up top.

Now, I'm not saying McClay is to blame for both or either one. LVE was red flagged and supposedly teams were made aware of the condition, but Dallas still took him.

Was it stubbornness of we can fix/minimize the neck issue? There's an article in the Athletic on how the team really set their eyes on him early. Hell, when he was fully healthy/no neck issues he was a playmaker so they got the talent part right, but not the issues that came with a neck injury/resulting injuries from trying to avoid injuries to the neck.

Taco looked like Tarzan but played like Jane with Karen like attitude. The coaches missed on him, mainly due to his attitude and well Lawrence blossoming into a top LDE. The same position Taco would of played.

Hill was another coaches pick, with even Richard joining Rod that they needed that DT or it didn;t matter who they had in the secondary.

Luckily, Rod and his coach them up/napkin contracts are gone. But I wouldn't be afraid to pick off need as long as there is a solid agreement between the scouts and coaches.

In a weird twist of fate, Rod not wanting Shariff Floyd ended up with the Cowboys drafting Frederick, so I guess some credit there to Rod disagreeing with the scouts on that one. Although tbd on how Floyds career would of gone without the botched surgery.

Slater has proven against top competition that he can play the LT position. He has gone up against a few good players in the Big 10 in Chase, Zach Baun, Epensa with good success. You make the OL a strength again and have an excellent option if one of the Tackles go down, with Tyron it's very likely. We saw what happens when you lose your LT, see the Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Slater has been compared to Zach Martin, if we get anything close to that, it's a homerun pick! When this team has had a strong line, they have been successful. Would you rather draft Zach Martin or Bryon Jones? One is a hall of fame player, the other one is a real solid starter.

If they trade back with the Patriots Horn would be a good option.

I’m not sold on Horn. To grabby for NFL. If we’re intent on taking CB give me Newsome in 22-25 range or Stokes at top of rd 2

I like Newsome but the injuries worry me. Horn would have to work on that but I think Al Harris could show him the right way to grab. I remember reading last year that Diggs was too grabby and I think he worked with him on it.

thing is, how much difference is there between Horn and Diggs? And we got Diggs in rd 2

I’ll understand if we take Slater but I’ll be pissed if we reach for Horn

I really don't understand why Slater is not a reach and Horn is. I've seen both ranked in the low teens by some.
