Focus on the trenches take the next step

The lasting impression from the playoff loss to the 49ers was that they destroyed us on both sides of the line of scrimmage. They just couldn't compete against the 49ers inside the trenches and the game wasn't as close as the final score would indicate.

Throughout the year, we heard a common theme after several losses, we weren't "physical enough". Teams like Denver/KC/ARZ completely shutdown our offense and Defense had it's struggles.

If this front office continues to draft the skilled positions outside of the trenches, this team will never get over the top.

The likes of Connor Williams, Biaz and the minimum NT has to go. Maybe a inline TE who can actually block! They have plenty enough weapons on both sides of the football against the pass, but don't have the horses up front to run the football and stop the run!!

I mean they should use this draft to pepper the crap out of both lines. I'd take multiple OL and DL. They won't but that's because they overvalue what they think they have in JAGs like Watkins and Armstrong.

Yes, but don't overlook the fact that with the success of Aaron Donald, more and more teams have focused on drafting uber quick DTs and/or moving DE types to DT.
- Connor Williams was actually good vs Aaron Donald.
- The issue is that he would struggle with no-name big DTs similar to his teammate and borderline NFL talent Justin Hamilton.

The 49ers use a unique run blocking scheme.
- It's zone but with a Fullback. Shanahan's father was the 1st NFL Head Coach to fully embrace zone run blocking. His OL coach Alex Gibbs is considered the original Guru of the Zone Blocking Scheme.
- One other OL coach back in the late eighties to early nineties tried to implement it in the NFL after having success with it in college, but the team didn't acquire players specifically to fit his scheme.
- When Mike Shanahan with OL coach Alex Gibbs came to Denver, Shanahan made a full bore commitment to get the OLinemen that Gibbs wanted for his scheme.
- It made stars out of RBs that had far less success with other teams.

The Rams are also a top ZBS team.
- They gave Marinelli a Pantsing in the 2018 playoff game due to their Zone scheme.
- Marinelli's scheme just didn't have an answer for the ZBS regardless of what players were on the field.

I dont disagree but the problem comes in when they rely on the draft for too many needs.

If we have a hole at a certain position, mocking a player there in the 5th round doesn't solve it.

IMO they need to get ahead of TE and RB before they end up doing something dumb next year because there's no one else. I said that about DE a year ago and it was barely discussed.

Can't just think about the upcoming year.....especially when it comes to the draft, as you aren't likely to find more than one or two immediate contributors.

The general idea would be to draft a TE and take the 11 million you're not paying Schultz and invest it in the lines.

In the end....you've got it though.....running the ball and stopping the run are problems like 5-6 for this organization, but probably 1-2 ON the field.

There used to be a saying, Denver can find a 1k runner every year on day 3. I hoped the Cowboys got rid of Moore and brought one on the staff of the 49ers or Rams. As it turns out, I believe there were 2 became HC's this offseason.

Yes, Connor Williams did have success with Donald, but struggled with the bigger/stronger DT's. However, there aren't many Donald's out there but more of the Justin Hamilton's. Lack of an anchor inside was a problem in the Romo years too, until they drafted Frederick and started power Guards like Leary and the KC hall of famer before him, forget his name.

They have to find interior lineman who can not only anchor to give Dak a pocket, but get a push in the run game. Many of Zeke's carries last yr, he had lineman behind the line once he got the ball. Also, they must clean up all the self-induced penalties.

As much as I preach about not counting on mid round picks to contribute immediately, I do think that can happen at RB3 and TE2.

The concern at RB is we can finally get out of the Elliott deal after this year, but Pollards deal is up as well.

I dont see much of a future for Rico, or Judge Ito or Goggles Paisan....so they may end up doing something dumb like giving out yet another 2nd deal to a RB or working a pay cut with Elliott.

We need fresh legs back there in the worst way....the one place we DON'T want a veteran....but they also shouldn't go into next years draft counting on getting two of them.

So....kinda hoping for one this year as well as next.

I think he makes more of an impact than a 2nd tier Edge rusher, although I would like both.
