Getting reports that Brian Stewart is going to be our new DC.

Don't think I care for that too much but who knows maybe he is better than when he was here with Wade.

I am thinking Arizona got the better DC in Casteel.

I would tend to agree, but I would think DH would have had a bunch of different choices, especially after that bowl game.

I guess we have to trust that he knows what/who he is looking for.

I'd hoped that with his experience, some attention would actually be paid to UH's defense after Briles virtually ignored it during his tenure.

Alas, while there *some* improvement at UH, it was nothing remarkable to speak of. Good kids, but they relied way too much on the offense steam rolling teams. Never really knew how to play a defensive battle nor without a lead.

That's why it was so disheartening to see Southern Miss go up/down the field on 'em...and to watch UH do virtually nothing on offense to respond.

A&M should look forward to some of that next year. WVU too, maybe. lol

These fast paced, up tempo offenses propose a great challenge to their defenses.

They either go 4 plays and a score, or 3 and out.

Either way, the defense wears down without time consuming drives on offense to give them time to catch their breath.

Holgorsen does show some commitment to the run, which I like. Especially if teams try to play 7 or 8 in the secondary.

WVU teams have previously always shown pride in being good on defense, I hope that "pride" can continue.

We'll see.

Now hearing that Larry Johnson (defensive Line coach at Penn State) called WVU and said he was interested in the job.

Really don't like the idea of Stewart so hopefully that was just a rumor.

Since we are talking defenses. Word is Mike Stoops will be coming back to Oklahoma and be Co-D w/ Venerables going back to being the backer coach like it was when MStoops was w/ Oklahoma before moving to AZ.

Stewart didn't discuss what specific opportunities await but said he's excited about the future after the success the Cougars had this season.

"I feel like we're 13-1, we played good defense, I like the opportunity to do the same thing somewhere else or get back in the NFL and coach at the highest level," Stewart said. "Basically, there are a lot of things going on ... I'm excited about the opportunities that are coming across my desk."

"I had a great time here," Stewart said. "The players --- I love these guys. I love the coaching staff, our defensive staff and I loved our game plan each week, how we got better every week."

Stewart, 47, said he aspires to be a head coach eventually.

"For me to have the opportunity to be a head coach, I'm going to have to be at a traditional BCS school and be successful," Stewart said. "You've got to be successful. That's one of the things that's driving me."

In fairness in needs to be pointed out that this past season UH finished 62nd in yds allowed (380.3/gm) and 34th in pts allowed (22.4/gm). That might not sound like much, but you have to remember that Stewart did this (1) with a cast made up for the most part of 1-2 star level talent; (2) because the Coogs offense scored so quickly the UH defense was on the field for 1045 snaps (third most in the nation ahead of only Oregon and Okie State).
