That’s what three years in a college strength program will do for a player. The Summers who could barely bench 135 when he arrived on campus now maxes out at 265. He squats 295 pounds and held the team high in the hang clean at 360 before teammate B.J. Hayes beat him by five pounds.
Summers made a big leap in the last 12 months, Skalaski said, as he grew into his lanky body. Summers said his parents wanted him to come home to Jacksonville, Fla., this summer, but he elected to stay on campus to lift and work with Brown instead.
Add the strength aspect of Summers’ game to his ability to win jump balls with just about any defensive back he faces, and you have the recipe for a breakout season. Through five games, Summers — who’s actually grown an inch to 6-5 — already has 43 receptions, five shy of the total from his first two seasons combined. He leads the Football Championship Subdivision in receiving yards (561) and touchdowns (eight) and can easily be thrust into the conversation of the most improved players in the country.
