This is from DC. com:

Luepke is the lone player on the roster that has been teammates with Trey Lance as the two shared a season together at North Dakota State. For Luepke, he's thrilled about welcoming in his former QB1 to Dallas.

"I haven't talked to him yet, but I'm gonna shoot him a text tonight," he said. "Pretty excited that I get to be teammates with him again. I think Trey is one of the best leaders I've been around in the locker room before. He always has positive energy, which really helps in the huddle no matter what kind of game's going. He really does that well. Off the field, he's a really special guy too."

Okay, so he’s a good leader and a special guy. That’s great, now let’s get him some reps and see where he is at as a QB. I hope we blow out a bunch of teams and Trey can get some reps in. Then we’ll see what McCarthy can do with him.

This looks to me like a very uncommon situation where a very highly drafted young quarterback is given up on so quickly.

There have been others of course, but in most of those cases - like Jamarcus Russell or Johnny Manziel - bad attitudes and poor work ethic were involved.

That doesn’t appear to be the case here at all but more a lack of patience by the 49’ers with a young, inexperienced quarterback who clearly needed time.

While there’s certainly no guarantee that Lance ever pans out, it’s good to know that it won’t be for his own lack of trying.

I sure hope so. He looked really good against the Raiders. I don't care if it wasn't against the starters. You can see his abilities, regardless of the opponent.
The versatility is worth hanging on to. He could be a real weapon over the next few years. I don’t see how they could expose him to be poached by another team for the sake of what would likely be a 4th TE.

Especially since Luepke can be the 4th TE if the need arises.
