Watching the NFL playoffs this year, it’s patently obvious that the 4 teams competing for conference championships had a combination of two critical elements that make for playoff success in this league. And it’s been this way for a very long time.

I would drill it down to this simple formula: Talent + Excellent Coaching = NFL playoff success.”

You must have both to build a champion. Talent acquisition is critical, obviously, and thankfully the Cowboys front office has done a much better job the last 5 years in the draft. Free agency...not so much. But this team has acquired a generally good young core of talent.

Sadly, the second part of the formula is sorely lacking. We have 7.5 years of watching Jason Garrett’s close to the vest, predictable style of football. Mostly mediocre with occasional outbursts of success (2014, 2016) resulting in 2 playoff seasons out of 7 and 1 measly wild card round win.

Coaching maximizes talent. Raise your hand if you think this team has maximized its talent in the last 7 years. I don’t see a lot of hands, lol.

With Jerry’s strange commitment to a head coach who has made the playoffs 28% of the time, I guess we have to hope our talent is so overwhelming, it covers the coaching gap.
