Free Safety- don't get it

I don't get why everyone is in a panic about free safety, surely between Coleman and the others we can get by this year, we have more immediate needs in the LB and 0-line area, a back up nt is there as well, not sure a wr/kr is not higher than FS, I guess others see it differently..

Singleton is a better OLB than Davis is a FS. Coleman on the other hand is arguable.

I think most devalue the role of safety.

In cover 2 scheme, which we run a lot of, the two safeties occupy the deep halves from hash to sideline. How many times did Henry get burnt over there with no help? (Hint, watch the SF and SD games).

In a man cover scheme the FS man covers backs and sometimes TEs. Do you feel comfy with Davis covering the likes of Portis,Barber,Westbrook,Shockey,Cooleyetc?

In a cover 3, the safety covers all the deep stuff. Do you really think Davis or even Coleman can do that better than some of the big time prospects?

We gave up waaaaaaaaaaay too many plays over 30 yards to be a good D.

Have a valid FS takes our Lbs away from coverage and allows them to rush the passer. Give the D a lot more dynamicism.

part of the reason we played cover 2 a lot is because we didn't have the pass rush. if we have the pass rush then we can play a lot more man and attack the LOS and the QB. an OLB will do wonders for this defense compared to a FS.

We don't really play near as much Cover2 as we used to. Since we have gone to the 34, we play a lot more man or we role coverage.

Fine, then get an average safety. Draft one in the mid rounds. I'm not saying Keith Davis can't be upgraded, and if he's as bad as many people make him out to be then it shouldn't be very difficult to find one. But dont misallocate anymore high draft picks or huge contracts to the secondary when its already top heavy now and will only get worse in the next couple of years (assuming we want to keep Roy and TNew around). Not when we have one of the worst collective OL's in the NFL, and not when we're starting Al Singleton in a premiere playmaking position in the 3-4.

I think you've nailed it. As your front seven improves, an average safety will look good back there.

I put far less value on the FS position that I do on a pass rusher or run stopper. The keys to a solid defense, in my opinion, are the ability to stop the run and the ability to pressure the passer.

Even though the defense improved last year, the pass rush was still below average and the run game gave up 4.2 YPC. For as much as we harp on BP's ball control offense, I think it hid some shortcomings on the defensive side of the ball by keeping them off the field.

Bottom line: FS isn't an impact position. Get them later or draft a corner and move them over. Spend high picks on cornerstone positions. QB, WR, T, front seven.
