From NFL perspective, what are the best reasons to not start the season on Labor Day weekend?

Not from an NCAA FBS perspective. We all know why they like it this way. That's obvious. But selfishly, why wouldn't the next step for the NFL be to, instead of adding a week on to the end of the season, start a weekend earlier?

No agenda. Real question.

I don't know why it hasn't already happened.

To many fans on holiday weekend not at home. Tv ratings will suffer. I think they did that a few years back and ratings suffered

It's just really not business smart to open the season on long weekends because a lot of people travel during them regardless of the holiday and it's worse for the NFL since most of their games are on Sunday as a Monday holiday would put the Sunday games right in the middle of the long weekend.
