I was watching a biography on Carol Burnett last night and it brought back a lot of memories from her variety show and the characters she used to play.

Got me to thinking ... who are the funniest women in television and movies?

Along with Carol, I thought of Lucille Ball. She was a natural comedian who specialized in physical comedy.

Of the more contemporary performers, Chelsea Handler comes to mind.

Women often play the straight part to the clumsy males around them so it's harder for some to stand out as genuinely funny even though a lot of them are.

Jean Stapleton as Edith on All in the Family is the only one to rival Carol Burnett and Lucille Ball.

Mary Tyler Moore on both series she was in.

Rhea Perlman as Carla always killed me. Very underrated.

Speaking of Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence is very under appreciated.

No doubt Lily Tomlin and Gilda Radner are/were very talented but I never got a huge laugh from either.

Judy Tenuta has been pretty funny the few times I've seen her act on TV.

Oh how could I forget Gilda Radner? I laughed non stop at her.

I can't say Judy Tenuta has ever made me laugh. To each his own.

She has since turned into a novelty cartoon, but back in and around 1979 I thoroughly enjoyed watching Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson go at it. They had an excellent chemistry (before it blew up) and she was very funny (back then).

Cheri Oteri's work on SNL was outstanding, especially the "Morning Latte" bit, and of course the cheerleader with Will Ferrell. She also did a great Judge Judy.

Though I think she spends a little too much time on gays, I like Kathy Griffin.

Oh, leave her alone. Who else is gonna sleep with her after all!?

:D

Jane Curtain was good on SNL. So was Jan Hooks.

Wanda Sykes can be pretty funny at times. Good stand up and I liked her on the few episodes of Curb Your Enthusiasm that I have seen.

The obvious contemporaries who haven't been mentioned...

Ellen Degeneres -- Has to be one of the funniest women alive, assuming you're like me and disregard her talkshow.

Sarah Silverman -- you may or may not like her brand of humor, but for the most part she's hysterical IMO.

George Burns and Gracie Allen?

:):)

I was just going to post Gracie Allen.

She was a riot. Burns was straight man to her ditzyness. She was priceless.
