There has been a thought circulating around D/FW and Cowboys nation that the media completely over-reacted to the idea that the team had not been playing well of late, despite the fact it lost to a good Commanders team and defeated a team (Bengals) that took the Super Bowl-champion Giants to overtime.

Turns out, the players had an idea, too. And so did the head coach. It took losing against the Cardinals to confirm the idea that the Cowboys were indeed not playing well.

"You could see that we've lost two out of the last three games," receiver Patrick Crayton said. "That wasn't a hidden secret. We haven't played well the last three games."
It seemed only fair to ask the head coach if by defeating the Bengals winning covered up for some of the flaws that are now painfully obvious over these past few weeks.

"That's what you worry about when you win," Wade Phillips said. "That you're over looking things that you need to do better. That's why you have to be, coaching wise, win or lose you have to be consistent with these things we did wrong and these things we need to get better.

"We try to give them exactly what happened, win or lose, and I think you get better and can be more consistent that way."

Not sure Phillips exactly answered the question, but he did sorta/kinda/maybe acknowledge there were some problems before.

McBriar Out Eight Weeks
Punter Mat McBriar will miss the next eight weeks after his right foot was effectively crushed on the game-ending blocked punt on Sunday.
He left the game hobbling and the original diagnosis was a bruise.
The Cowboys are now in the market for a punter. They had rookie Jay Ottovegio from Stanford during the preseason before they released him.
McBriar was averaging 49.0 yards per punt on 24 attempts this season. He made the Pro Bowl in 2006.

Felix Jones likely out 2 weeks
Here's another hit to the offense. Rookie star running back Felix Jones is likely out two weeks with a left hamstring strain. He suffered the injury on his 14-yard run in the opening drive of the season half. He did not return return to the game after the injury.

Jones had an MRI on Monday and now fellow rookie Tashard Choice moves up and takes his spot as backup. Expect plenty of Marion Barber on Sunday against the Rams.

Wade's extensive injury reportAs everyone already knows by now, QB Tony Romo has a fractured pinkie finger. Wade said it is week-to-week with Romo and wouldn't commit to him being out 4 weeks.

RB Felix Jones will have an MRI today on his left hamstring, which was strained.

Punter Mat McBriar is having an MRI on his right foot that was crushed on the blocked punt. He was listed as having a foot bruise last night.

WR Sam Hurd is having surgery on his left ankle.

OLB Anthony Spencer has a hamstring strain and is week-to-week.

Hurd done for the Season Mcbriar out for 8 weeks that the rest of the season basically. Romo gone for 4 weeks and Jones out for 2 weeks who knows how long Spencer will be gone for this is going to be ugly. We only have Rogers as an OLB to spell Ellis and Ware.....We are in trouble and it's going to be ugly.

McBriar and Hurd will go on IR. We need to find a bacj up LB soon and a punter to replace McBriar.

Whats up with Spencer?

Been waiting for this kid to play lights out......and this year he is always injured....then misses his rehab session and gets fined during training camp and now is injured again.

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

Remember all the moaning and groaning about how negative the local media coverage was after the Cowboys' sloppy win over the Bengals?

Well, the only complaining around these parts now is about the way the Cowboys have played the last few weeks.

While Greg Ellis was not-so-subtly criticizing the coaching, he mentioned that he had concerns about the Cowboys' performances while they were winning. He bit his tongue then because he didn't want to be perceived as a guy who's always griping.

"Sometimes you need to look at things after you win, too, to say, 'We won that game, but let's look at it in real time,'" Ellis said. "In real time, we're not there. We're not there. We can do it, but right now it's not happening."

Heck, even Wade Phillips acknowledges that the fact the Cowboys beat the Bengals masked some flaws.

"That's what you worry about when you win, you know, that you're overlooking things that you need to do better," Phillips said.

Actually, Wade, you were worried last week about the Cowboys not getting enough credit.

I think the Dallas media is about as thin-skinned as it comes.

The Cowboys and their fans weren't saying that all was well. No one said that. But we were glad to get a win, and as Romo said, no one should need to apologize for getting a win.

If anything, all this shows me is that the media was wrong in the first place. Clearly, there were (and are) some problems. But just as clearly, the coaches and players on this team also knew it.
