If I'm Kellen Moore, the three players I would work into the gameplan this week are Gallup, Hendershot and Ferguson. Like last week, I getting Michael Gallup involved early on could help spark the offense and force the defense to open up a little bit on their double coverages of Lamb, Hilton and the running backs.
And that's what it did.
The first two drives against the Bucs were lackluster three-and-outs. But as soon as Michael Gallup got involved, this team started rolling in the right direction.
I'm looking for something similar to happen today. Getting the ball to Gallup will force the defense to adjust to cover him, which should open things up for everyone else.
The key to success this game will be taking on the 9ers pass rush, which is one of the best in the league, if you ask me. To accomplish this, Dallas could utilize Gallup as a possession-type of receiver.
Like I said last week, Gallup hasn't had the best regular-season due to his injury from last year. But he hasn't lost his clutch-factor, as we saw against the Bucs. Almost every one of the plays he was involved in was a so-called "clutch" play.
On the other hand, we also saw what Ferguson can add as well. His 30 yard reception was the most from any player in that game. And many said Ferguson was too slow to be anything other than a 5-10 yard route player. But that play proved that it's not always all about speed. It's about getting open and finding holes in the defense, which is something both Ferguson and Hendershot are capable of.
Running high-percentage pass plays targeting either of them could end up boding well for Dallas, as the 49ers have enough to worry about with Lamb, Hilton, Pollard and Schutlz.
The 49ers offense is stacked with talent, so Dallas should look to match them with its own players, some who just haven't made their names as big as some of the 49ers players.
That could all change if guys like Ferguson and Schultz end up with significant contributions to this game.
