So, I noted the other day that I purchased the four book collection. It arrived yesterday. When I picked up the box; I thought damn, this is heavy to only have four books inside!

These books are thick. I hope they are as great as most of you say. I generally start to burn out on books after 500pgs and the first one (which I heard was the shortest) has over 800+ pages. I burn out on a story to the point that when I pick up a trilogy set of books, I don't read them back to back. I will mix in other books in between. (usually different types)

Well, anyway, we will see how the first book goes.

LOL, yep they are some big ones. You will really like the 3rd one. I'd bet you will keep reading this series all the way through.

They're all fantastic. I read the series on my Kindle though. It doesn't make it feel quite so bad.

Hmm, I'm just about done with the third one, and this is the first one that I felt was seriously bloated. Martin and/or his editor could have (should have) cut a couple hundred pages out of it and ended up with a better, tighter book without losing anything. The first two are long, but not significantly longer than they needed to be.

Best series I've ever read.

3rd Book is quite possibly the best book ever written imo.

Imo the longer the better, so long as it's good.

You will enjoy the series.

Just be a little patient as they introduce a ton of characters but it eventually all comes together and gets extremely good.

You will probably be disappointed in the 4th book, but the saving grace is that the 5th one is due out this summer.

You need to read more books. :) Excellent series however.

I agree with him on this, and I read pretty frequently. And really I haven't read anything that I consider anywhere close to the same level as this series, and that includes some very popular books (LOTR for ex.), some more obscure books, and even some of Martin's other works.

Obviously I haven't read everything, so there easily could be something better, but I've yet to find a contender.

Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent series, as I said. I just feel I personally have read more enjoyable books that kept me a bit more entertained throughout than the GRRM novels.

Example:

The Chronicles Trilogy written by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman comes to mind. Writers of the Dragonlance series of books. Hugely popular I might add.

I also feel R.A. Salvatore is an excellent writer. Certainly on GRRM's level and ability. His worlds and characters are as good or better than GRRM's Westeros and cast. Salvatore was the creator of Drizzt Dourdan and the Forgotten Realms world if you remember. Im also a big fan of Raymond E. Feist. He is a superb writer of Fantasy as is also Robin Dobbs.

Check out Magician if you ever get the chance. It is the 1st book of the Riftware Saga from Raymond Feist. It's an old book, written back in 82. His world of Crydee is amazing.

2nd book in the series for those interested is Silverthorn followed by A Darkness at Sethanon.

Mr. Martin and I have emailed numerous times togther. Very entertaining gentleman and a huge NYG fan I might add.

He does write some excellent stories. They do however take a loooong time to get finished and published between novels.

Wow. Dragonlance was the first set of novels I ever read. It got me into reading. One of my all time favorites. Still not on the level of Martin's writing. It's way too black and white. Martin's writes a very realistic and grey story, which is what i love so much about it.

Yeah. I dont understand that either. Dragonlance was good but not on the level of GRRM.

Same with Salvatore.
