I've said since the beginning of the year that Michael Gallup is sort of the X-Factor on the offense. For one, nobody expects much out of him. This week, all the talk has been about the Bucs WRs versus the Cowboys' banged up secondary. But nobody is mentioning Lamb, Gallup and T.Y. Hilton. To me, the Cowboys have the upper hand this game because the last time we played the Bucs, we had Lamb, who was struggling to get into regular-season form, and UDFA rookie WR Dennis Houston, as well as Noah Brown.
No Michael Gallup.
No T.Y. Hilton.
And no Tyron Smith.
But that group of WRs got it done enough to get the Cowboys to 4-1 early on.
One of the primary reasons we lost the first game was due to lack of separation from the WRs.
On the defensive side, the front office has done an admirable job bringing in guys like Xavier Rhodes, and others, to compete with their group of young guys after Anthony Brown went down with an ACL tear.
The key to our success against a defense that stymied us early on could be getting Michael Gallup involved early on in order to loosen up the deeper plays for Hilton, Lamb, the TEs, and running backs. Gallup hasn't been his former self, but he hasn't lost his clutch factor when called upon.
Playing possession football, and using Gallup as a possession-type of receiver early on, could help this offense find its spark. Other players I would look to get involved are Hendershot and Ferguson. In order for our primary pass receivers to be the most effective, it's important for other guys to get involved and making plays.
The Bucs defense can be good, but they're not nearly as good as I believed they were after the opener. They have holes we should be able to exploit. And the potential to outscore the Bucs is definitely a possibility.
Sure, we're playing the GOAT, Thomas Edward Patrick Brady, Jr., and most of our fickle fans have counted us out, because the team failed to log a perfect season.
However, at 12-5, no matter what happens here, win, lose, or draw, the Cowboys have a fair shot at winning this game. And even if the records were reversed, and the 8-9 Cowboys were hosting the 12-5 Bucs at Jerry-land, we all know the cliche' Any Given Sunday.
If you want to be on the safe side to protect your ego from believing this team can win, despite the obvious possibility they may lose, then that's your prerogative.
The rest of us acknowledge we've got just as good of a shot to win.
