This is a pretty big deal for some, so I figured I would post it here.
I know we have a few Photoshop and GIMP users here. One of the biggest issues some Photoshop users had with using GIMP is they hate the fact that it has a multiple window interface. Well, the newest release of GIMP (2.7.3) now has single window mode.
While it still only supports 8bit color, that really isn't a big deal unless you are doing lots of editing to photos. The reason being is the human eye can't distinguish more than 8bit color. The problem comes in when editing many times on the same image or layer. When merging effects or other things, more colors gives more room to more precise merges of colors. The less colors it has, the less precise it can be when merging the colors together and you start getting color loss. As noted though; if you are doing minimal edits of the photo / picture, then it's not really an issue.
Full 32bit color will be supported when GIMP 3 is released.
