Figured by the time I wanted any more disk space, the next version would be out, and I could hand down to my mom if it was enough of a hit to buy another. I also wanted to have one when I was in the hospital having my son.
Love, love, love it. I find what it doesn't do, I don't really miss. The new OS is very cool on it as well, and I'm looking forward to what it's going to do for me as a keyboard player now that it supports MIDI. I'm using it to play video from our baby monitor, general web surfing, iBooks/Kindle (which I like more than I thought I would), iTunes, and Netflix app--which is just amazing.
Other than for my keyboard rig, I haven't touched my laptop since I got it. Say what you will about Jobs and the whole development environment--this is a superb bit of tech.
I'm hearing April 2011 for the new one--but those are just rumors at this point. If you don't really care about the camera (which I don't) and don't really want to wait, I'd say go ahead and get one. Like the iPods/iPhones, there will still be a decent resale market for the first gen devices, even when the next model is out. I don't see the 3rd party (meaning non App Store--there are a zillion non-Apple apps in the store already) thing happening.

One thing I would suggest is, if you're going to get one, get one with 3G. Don't get the cheapest version. The extra cash for 3G is certainly worth it. You don't have to page for monthly 3G service, you only pay for it when you need it. But the ability to surf anywhere on it takes the device to another level.
Perhaps, but I'm not a trial lawyer, so I wouldn't know.CowboyMcCoy;3715694 said:Great for lawyers to look up codes in trial, no?
This is pure hyperbole (aka "a load of BS"). I know at least a dozen people that have iPads and not a single person has indicated they regret it.DIAF;3715787 said:Everyone I know that has one regrets the purchase.

The ipad sort of fills all of those spaces, but doesnt excel at any of them and can't make phone calls. If you've already got a laptop, smartphone, and/or a personal media player you might not like the purchase.
