Bought a new car recently. I am happy with the 10 speaker Bose system for now, but the head unit itself is a little lacking.

I've previously had good luck with Pioneer, Kenwood and Clarion. Not sure what is considered above average to top of the line these days.

Any advice?

I favor Pioneer, got one of their decks in my Jeep... you can't do much better than Bose speakers, IMO, so you're good to go there (though I have Infinity speakers)...

Bose is crap, over priced and cheap quality. Pioneer is good stuff. Kenwood is solid.

Alpine is a good go to brand, they are still top of the line competition level equipment.

There are other brands such as MBQuart, JBL, Kicker, Autotek, etc.

But for a Head Unit you can't go wrong with Alpine.

I know the Bose stuff sold in cars is not top of the line, but they are good enough. I think they will sound a lot better with a better source. The 3 band EQ on the factory stereo just doesn't cut it for dialing in the sound the way i want. Down the line I'll probably upgrade the speakers all around as well.
