I am on a Notre Dame forum and several of the posters think there is nothing wrong with any of this.
I ask them if keeping your word means anything and they all said no it does not unless it is in writing.
Then I ask what a letter of intent is and they shrug.
Not surprisingly, they all want Notre Dame to ease up on admissions and academics in order to win.
What we are seeing is not win at all costs; frankly the outcome of games no longer matters as much as how much money each program can rake in.
I hate it; but a lot of this can be laid at the door of the NCAA; one of the most incompetent and corrupt organizations ever.

Agree re corruption. Had the misfortune of interfacing with a particular NCAA football event where the suits main interests were doing deals with ticket touts, trying to squeeze money from every source... and making sure drug testers didnt show up at the event.

Transfer portal isn't trash, the NCAA is for trying to horde the money for as long as possible.
They couldn't put any guardrails around it because they were happier profiting and letting it play out like this over 4-5 years.
Kids have same opportunites as Coaches now.
But new revenue sharing deals starting next year will include player buy outs.
That will be very helpful to teams getting players poached left and right.
The team bringing in a player will have to pay his out cost.
And this will all be signed and legal. not verbal and not no recourse for the kid stuff we've seen thus far where verbal promises mean jack squat.
Now we will get a Commish and a players' union to match the NFL which was always inevitable.
