People talk about this years draft being a weak QB draft. Even so, law of averages says that at least 2-3 of this years draft will be starting QBs - some may not be obvious at this point in time, but they will emerge.
Most mocks see only 1 QB being selected before our 1st pick! Normally you need to be in the top 5, and often in the top 3 to get the 2nd QB chosen. Often several QBs go in the first round.
What I'm saying is that there is value in drafting a QB early this year. Even if we dont use our 1st, we may get the 3rd or 4th QB drafted with our 2nd pick (which Jerry usually wastes on a project). How often do we get the chance to get one of the highest ranked QBs?
Those who are not Dak fans will probably agree with taking a QB - this could be our low cap value starter in a year or two when we're in cap hell. But even Dak fans should be able to see the strategic benefit to the team:
- Dak's contract is really one that will see him him FA in 2 years time. Gives us options.
- We have the weakest QB depth chart in the league - no realistic option at backup if the starter goes down.
- Increased competition which makes players better.
- Chance of hitting on an elite starter, but without being 100% dependent on having to right now.
Its a no brainer.
