There Are Government Apps for That
by Claudine Zap
No matter what your opinion of the present administration, everyone can probably agree on this: Wading through government programs (you know, the stuff that's supposed to help you) is a chore and a half.
Well, the government for once has already thought of that. The White House relaunched its website USA.gov and added a mobile app store — all to make bureaucracy your online friend. Now, instead of a faceless federal office, you'll get a friendly website. Don't laugh — that is, at least, the hope.
The site features a mobile application store where, for free, you can do anything from calculating your BMI to calculating your taxes. Let's take a look...
Taking a trip and want real-time info on airport delays? There's a government app for that. Or wondering if that medicine you're taking is on the recall list? Yep, there's an app for that. Simply enter in the product name or scan the barcode and be in the know.
If you're running low on biodiesel and need to find a refueling station: Amazingly, there is also an app for that. For international travelers, there is an embassy locator app that will help you find and contact a U.S. embassy or consulate anywhere in the world — and learn of travel alerts. Plus, get the latest on the FBI's Most Wanted list, from its top 10 to top terrorists. Or watch for the real danger: UV rays.
One app that we will have to see in action to believe it works: FEMA Mobile. While there are only 18 apps in total to start, the government promises more will be available soon.
