I hate to say it but Shotty's best grade is C from all the ones reviewed. Hell, a couple of them gave the Saints a better grade WITHOUT a coach.......that's cold (lol). I know I'm a minority but pulling for him to prove them wrong big time. It will be interesting to see who is still standing after three years.......

BTW....Just me but Shotty's grade is much better with his coordinators included. In other words, Johnson was a top guy and has hired strong coordinators. The same with Vrabel but I'm not impressed by Glenn's coordinators or Carroll as much as I am Shotty's. Shotty gets a solid B grade with his coordinators included IMO.

Doesn't the grade depend on what the team was trying to achieve with the hire? Most teams are looking for a guy that will win games for them. I am not convinced that is what the Cowboys were trying to achieve by hiring Schottenheimer.
  you lost me Creep. What do you think they are trying to accomplish?

At the end of the day, I like what Helman said........there's nothing to suggest Shotty will be any worse than any of the other FIRST TIME head coaches coz none has ever done it. He's right........being a master play designer or play caller doesn't mean you can manage people and a team. This is particular true when things start going south and pressure kicks in.

The speculation is ridiculous. Having an opinion is fine, but declaring someone an A or a D when they've never done it is just silly. To those of you who think you know, why is Schotty such a horrible hire? If a team other than Dallas had hired him, would you think more of him? That seems to be the criteria for perceived coaching greatness...Anybody But Dallas.

Schottenheimer has been in the NFL 24 years. The Cowboys just made him a HC for the first time. No other team was interested in interviewing him for any position.

Just sayin'...

The only one I'd give an A is Carroll, because we know what he can do as a head coach. Most of the rest are in the same boat as Schottenheimer in that they are getting their first shot and we have no idea what they will do with it. Even though I would have been glad to have Vrabel because he did take the Titans to an AFC Championship Game, he hasn't exactly had great success as a coach: Two losing seasons out of six; two others with fewer than 10 wins.

Yeah. Same with the draft grades. How can you immediately grade a draft without seeing the draftees play a single down in the NFL.

So what no other team was interested. Is that some type of criteria before one can actually become a HC?
As was stated ... anybody but Dallas.

Just Sayin'...

No-Schott has had three opportunities to interview as a head coach. He was beaten out by Rex Ryan for the Jets job and turned down the other two to stay on as the Jets' OC. He hasn't had any in a long time, though, because either he was part of a staff that failed and was flushed with the head coach or the coach parted ways with him (I think, that was only Seattle, though).

So once upon a time, he was a hot up-and-coming name, but he missed his window then. I'm not saying he should have been hired as our head coach after so long in the league, just that he has had other opportunities.

I mean we have seen it too many times ...........coaches who are offensive or defensive genius play callers or play designers but lack the leadership to run to big show. Even some college football elite coaches couldn't do it and they were used to dealing with the big picture but the NFL is a different monster.

That's a little different though. Did the team draft for need or totally go for glitz while ignoring needs? Did they draft players that don't have complementary pieces in place on the team to help them have the most success (e.g, drafting a straight line RB with a terrible run-blocking OL they didn't improve in the draft, etc.)? Did they reach for projects when they need solid starters at specific positions and on and on. There's a ton of factors you can use to grade a draft class. For head coach, all you have is history. And for this team, did we hire a head coach that can run his show given how Jerry and company like to interfere? Most out there see Schott as a company man. Is that was Dallas needs given that we fall short with talent? Hence the grading, I believe.

I think you need to reread my post. What I said was 100% true and I never discussed the past.
