Has anyone seen this site? grammerly.com

This site is awesome, but for someone who would use it maybe once a month tops, (probably no more than 3-4 times a year more likely) it's too expensive to be worth it for me. It would cost me probably $20 per use. :( It's cool, but not that cool! :laugh2:

Although, if you're in school or write for a living. (blogging, letters, books, etc) It would almost be a must have.

I pasted an old term paper I had received an A on and came up with a score of 55 of 100

That's what I get for cut and pasting. I see you couldn't correct it. :laugh2:

I posted a project I'm currently working on and got an 88 of 100. It's currently only about 2600 words though. I didn't sign up to see exactly what it said though.

sites like that fail because they don't account for personal voice. There's a lot of grey area when it comes to writing as far as grammar rules and there are a ton of things that are consistently done wrong everywhere. Those sites eliminate those and make writing too technical imo.

If you're a college student the rules are usually pretty well defined. At least what you get graded on.

Maybe in business writing or something like that, but not in English/creative writing programs.

I'll give you an example...Technically/grammatically, you're never supposed to start a sentence with and. For instance, "And, the board had a meltdown."

But tons of great writers do that all the time. That's what I assume that kind of web site would fix and I don't think it needs to.

That doesn't mean sites like this don't work. I don't think they change your grammar. They just notate grammar errors and show them to you. You review it and decide if you want to change what you have.

The good thing is it DOES find grammar errors. Intentional or not.

See I think in pointing them out that there is an implied value that it needs to be changed, so students are going to make those changes. I don't like that.

I guess I shouldn't have said it fails, because technically they do work. I just think their overall design is flawed.

Whoever told you that was a rule is full of it. They just tell 4th graders that because they don't think they're capable of using it with restraint.

A lot of teachers know about linguistic variances and ambiguity. These days, grammar isn't as important as getting the message across. A lot of writers use bad grammar on purpose to portray a different dialect and stuff like that.

I finally finished my short story (sort of short, it's about 5.2k words) I ran it threw this website and it scored a 71 of 100. (earlier it was 88 of 100 at about 60% completed)

https://lh3.***BROKEN***/-mYWaHf605Lo/T0MgsPgo0vI/AAAAAAAABUo/i3k3cBholHY/s527/gammarly.jpg

Damn I wish I could look at its specifics. Though a first draft (basically typed off the top of my head) I could tear a part without needing to see it.

These things aren't perfect, but it's a lot easier when something can point out possible errors, but more specifically definite errors.
