Good morning Zoners.

On April 13th I lost my job in Tampa Bay, Florida, two weeks later on April 27th the State of Alabama was hit with the largest outbreak of tornadoes in the State's history. 39 of the States 63 Counties have been declared a disaster area by the Government.

Through a Facebook group called Toomers for Tuscaloosa, a page dedicated to connecting volunteers and people with dire needs, I friended a lady who told me If I decided to come and help volunteer that she would make sure I was taken care of.

Monday the 9th, with the financial help of my church and my family I caught a flight into Birmingham, AL. where I was greeted by my new friends who set me up in an Apt. on the campus at the University of Alabama just a few short minutes from the destruction of an EF5 tornado. My initial plan was to stay 30 to 60 days and volunteer but it looks like I will be staying long term.

Wednesday after my first day of service another one of my new friends took me on a tour through the path of destruction. It is absolutely mind boggling when to see this with your own eyes.

I arrived here without a camera but will be getting one soon so stay tuned for some images and possibly some video and I'm sure I'll have some great stories as well.

That is really fantastic! I wish I were in a position to do something like that, so I'll have to live vicariously through you.

Growing up in the Midwest, I've seen the type of destruction tornadoes can do. Powerful and scary.

Looking forward to seeing the pictures.

Excellent Signals. Can't wait to see the pics.

Does this mean that tomorrow's Friday Five will have something to do with Alabama and Tornados? :laugh2:

Good luck Signals.

I guess this was that EF-5:

"What the National Weather Service calls the Hackleburg Tornado traveled 132 miles, winds surpassing 210 mph, a nonstop scar in the earth running 90 miles from Hackleburg to Huntsville. Of a dozen deadly twisters across Alabama on April 27, this was the only one given the strongest rating of EF-5. This one tornado alone is thought to have claimed 70 lives, by far the deadliest single twister in state history. The Times this week traced the path of destruction, where countless survivors spoke with calm and wonder at simply being alive."

I had my first brush with fame yesterday while doing my volunteer work for an organization call Project Blessings.org. In the middle of things they wanted to take a group picture with the PB banner unfurled in front of us. I didn't learn until later it was because Gregory McElroy, Alabama's former QB and the MVP of the 2009 SEC Championship Game was there dropping off some of his autographed personal memorabilia to be auctioned off for donations. A few of the items included his cleats and jersey he wore in that Championship game. Just as a side note, Gregory's father also works for the Dallas Cowboys in marketing, I believe.

There were two items that didn't move in to offices to be auctioned off. One is a full length door mirror with a cherry wood frame that has three slots for personal photos. This is a personal item from his home. The cool thing is one of the photos is Greg with two Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders who autographed the photo for him. No one seems to be taking interest in this item so I am going to see if they'll let me have it later in the week. The other item is an XXL Crimson tide sweat shirt unworn with the tag still on it that belong to him.

Later on I will post the group photo with Greg, not because I think anyone here cares but because I can. :laugh2:

EDIT: P.S. Yeah yeah I know McElroy plays for the Jets now, save your negative mumbling for the Fan Zone. ;)

Way to stand out and be noticed...with that bright yellow t-shirt, you should be able to be seen for miles. lol

The distance from the building (center left) above the black SUV hood to the white suburban (center right) behind the telephone pole is about an half to 3/4 miles. This particular path of destruction continues for approximately 50 miles.
