It occurs to me and others who watch Tyler Guyton that as massive a figure he is it’s hard for the refs not to zone in on him and when he releases both his arms forward and the edge loses the physical battle with Guyton and end up eating turf out come the flags .

If I recall correctly Tyler Smith coming into the NFL could lean on both Tyron 77 and Jason Peters who was a Cowboy briefly for guidance and tutelage under Joe Philbin before he got canned .

I guess Guyton can speak to Tyler Smith and Zack Martin but Guyton seems to need coaching and guidance I’m not sure Mike Solari is delivering . These penalties just kill drives .

I will say having watched Guyton up close as a Cowboy I love the pick . He’s destined for All Pro he needs to refine his technique . I’m thrilled with Beebe as well and am glad Dallas made him a center . These types of draft picks elevate the team in the long run .

One of the knocks against him coming out of college was he's difficult to coach. That could be what we're seeing now.

one bad game? if that? and hes difficult to coach? i highly doubt it. Hes a rookie, this is a throw away year, let him learn. let him make mistakes.

Guyton wasn't a higher pick because the expectation was that he would be a project player. Not having these issues solved by week 4 really shouldn't be a shock. To be honest when I look at Guyton I see a future pro bowl player, but he looks like a guy who really needs another full offseason to get stronger.

Just saying what I heard on Sooner radio talk. It's a given he ain't the sharpest nail in box.

Solari might be progress stopper. I'm sure he was good in Seattle and in Dallas when Landry was there, but what he is doing seems like it's too complex for the new players.

Watching Guyton through 4 games, there’s a lot to like and also not like:
STRENGTHS:
  • He‘s obviously very athletic with size and great arm length, which is critical for playing tackle in the NFL. Which also shows he has huge upside.
  • He’s got a mean streak of aggressiveness which is seen often in the run game.
  • From what I’ve read he’s also very coachable which also adds to his upside.
WEAKNESSES
  • Struggles keeping his frame squared under him properly during pass blocking. I believe that will improve with time and coaching.
  • His hand placement is often too high leading to holding calls.
  • Vulnerable to pass rushers who can get quick leverage against him.
  • Needs to be quicker with his feet.
Guyton has a very bright future. But he’s going to need some patience and good coaching to develop. Very, very few NFL rookies are just plug and play at a high level.

Interesting comment . Broadus had mentioned on a podcast awhile back that scouts and assistant coaches don’t like the same player and he thought that was the case with Philbin & Tyler Smith and if a position coach is not thrilled with the pick it can be a problem . I wonder if an older coach like Solari can coach up Guyton .

Marc Columbo that’s a younger coach I wish Dallas would consider in 2025

Tyler Smith is a more powerful dude. We drafted him to play LT b/c tyron was getting hurt a lot. He got moved to G b/c his talent and draft position dictated that he needed to be on the field. Guyton is a project. He has the physical tools but he only played OT one year in college. He was actually a TE before the Sonners moved him to OT in 2023.

The assessment seems fine but the "coachable" moniker seems to fly in the face of reports people have referenced......which is it?

He’s a project that under the right circumstances can become dominant .

The penalties are drive killers . Like I said Guyton and Beebe are solid picks who both need time and coaching to pick up the NFL game as opposed to the Big 12

Good question, The Cowboys FO says he’s “very coachable” so maybe we should have a huge grain of salt with that.

You can see the weaknesses from this analysis watching Guyton struggle against NFL pass rushers. I think he needs to get stronger. Tyron Smith used his strength to stone rushers. His hands and arms locked DEs in place.

But you can see Guyton does struggle to stay square, and his hand placement is too high (some hands to the face not called against the Giants. He definitely needs to be quicker o his feet. Those inside moves that beat him are the result of bad footwork.

I think he has potential, but he needs more development. I am not ready to declare he will be an all-pro someday.

This x 1000. To add a bit I don’t see the coaching showing up at all where his hand placement and punch havnt changed and working on his set to help him when he is getting beat to his inside so regularly
