Would be great if they become a strength on the defense now along with the secondary and LB's. Not that the LB group is a strength, but it is not horrible.

Parsons, though more of a pass rusher. But LVE is solid, Clark looks to be pretty good. Maybe Cox improves.
Then we need to see Overshown as well possibly Harper improves as well.

Good to see Old Man Hankins passing on that knowledge to the young guys.
10 seasons in the league (four teams, both conferences) - Hankins has seen many, many blocking schemes and Olinemen techniques to help Smith get on a fast learning curve for not only his run stuffing role, but also the new assignment of pass rushing that he wasn't required to do in college.

Dallas Cowboys DT Johnathan Hankins described as a ‘willing mentor’ for rookie Mazi Smith

It appears a veteran defender has taken Mazi Smith under their wing.

That's one reason I'm glad we re-signed Hankins. He has definitely had success as a run defender and some as a pass rusher, so it's good for Mazi to learn from someone like him instead of having someone like Carlos Watkins being Mazi's "willing mentor."

I just wished Hankins had signed a longer deal. Next year, do we resign him or draft his replacement? I didn't want to go DL early again two years in a row.

I would keep him around another year and draft his eventual replacement on day 3. Cant see us going interior DL early again unless a good pass rushing 3tech falls into our lap.

If Mazi works out as a player who can play nose and 3-tech, I could see us drafting a backup/rotational nose anywhere from the third round on. However, I'd prefer even if we do that that we re-sign Hankins for another year and see if that player proves good enough to bump him off the roster. We haven't exactly been stellar at drafting later-round NTs (Bohanna, Ridgeway. Ivie, Carroll, Bishop). Lissemore was the last one that was halfway decent in 2010. Of course, most of those came under Marinelli, but Quinn hasn't had much success either with two late-round swings and two misses.

We just spent our 1st on our starting 1tech..you want to spend another 1st on his backup? Sounds like a great use of resources
It really depends on what Mazi is. If he's strictly a 1-tech, then we still need to find a high-caliber 3-tech. If he can push the pocket and consistently get pressure, then we need to add a run-down player to play next to him at 1-tech on those early downs.

Don't think anyone was advocating spending a first, though. The person you were quoting said third day (as in fourth through seventh rounds).

And it all starts with the guy leading the defense and hopefully soon the team.

I like the balance of veteran leadership on this team balanced with youth.

I like our chances this year, actually. My biggest worry is McCarthy.

Great to see a capable veteran setting the pace for sharing his knowledge with a talented rookie. This defense should benefit as a result.
