Might be a question for @bobhayes (staff). I think he has done some good break downs in the past.

I mean the defense is top 3.

The offense was like #1 in 19, was like #2 in 20 until Dak got hurt, like #1 last year. The only change is really Amari. Dak will be back. Should be a top tier offense. (Due to lower scoring, the ranking will be lower until Dak returns).

this is a fantastic team. Even Money Maher is carrying special teams.

so, if injury free and a touch of luck, looking Super Bowl bound…

Was going to say the 2007 Boys but checked their D and was #13 in points. For some reason, I remember them better. You really do have to go back to that 90’s dynasty defense to find one as shutdown as this.

But our offense is one of the worst in the league statistically.

My prediction from the start has been D and ST will carry the team, OFF will determine the season. Great Ds have carried some putrid offenses but I’d feel better if we could score at least another TD.

We didn't look "top offense" when Dak was playing week 1. Basing this on 2019 and then ignoring 2020 and 2021 (we weren't a top offense) is weird.

I believe the '92 49ers were #1 in offense and #3 in defense and we beat them in the NFCCG. I'm doing that off memory so I could be wrong.

Generally defenses aren’t ranked by scoring because that’s impacted by all 3 phases of the game. Give up a couple punt return TDs and suddenly your “defense” is playing poorly. Same with fumble or interception returns, still count against points allowed even if your D isn’t on the field.

Field position also affects this greatly. They get the ball back on your 30 yard line, you give up 4 total yards that drive and they still get 3 points because your defense “failed”. So 2007 Cowboys very likely had a better defense than 13th in points allowed indicates.

Patriots were both top 5 in offense and defense in 2007. It has happened, and I'm sure more than you think.

The deciding factor in this stuff when you are ranked #1 usually is how historic that offense or defense is.

It's not very sound logic if you're trying to apply years-ago success to today.

Dak isn't that QB from 2019 or 2020. And we aren't that offense from 2019 or 2020.

This team, if it's going to realize playoff success, will be driven by the defense.

In 2010 the San Diego Chargers had the #1 offense and the #1 defense and went 8-8

In total yards, yes. They were 2nd in scoring offense and 10th in scoring defense. Their record was 9-7. Seems like they should've won at least 11.

Being 10th in points allowed is likely why they missed the playoffs, as that was impacted by the turnovers/ bad special teams play that year. 10th in points allowed isn’t the same as 10th in scoring defense, unless you ignore every opponents drive that started in field goal range, or opponents’ defense or ST touchdowns. San Diego lost 16(!) fumbles that year. Imagine their opponents’ starting field positions. Free field goals everywhere. Can’t fault the defense for that.

When you see they’re first in yards allowed but 10th in points allowed, there’s a major opponent field position situation going on there

To Matt and Wooten, I am counting last year…

“The offense was like #1 in 19, was like #2 in 20 until Dak got hurt, like #1 last year.

The Dallas Cowboys had the most yards of total offense by a team in 2021, with 6,919 yards.
TEAM SEASON PPG
Dallas Cowboys 2021 31.2
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2021 30.1
Kansas City Chiefs 2021 28.2
Los Angeles Chargers 2021 27.9

Those 2010 Chargers were -6 in turnover differential. Only 8 teams were worse, all missed the playoffs.

Yeah that has a big factor. The offense was putting the defense into jeopardizing situations

So do you mean who has had an offense and defense that was top 3 at any point in the last couple years and didn’t win the super bowl?

Yep

If I recall right, I think they had disastrous special teams that year and also lost a lot of squeakers.
